Curbing Online Risks among School Children

By: Dennis John M. Espinoza, PhD

Children interact with various personalities online. Thus, as educators

and stewards, it is imperative that we become familiar with the cyber contact of
our children, i.e., who children interact with online.

Moreover, there is a need to recognize the various risks they are exposed
to in cyber space. These can be categorized as contact risks and content risks.
In the former, offenders victimize children purportedly for the production of
child pornography or any form of child sexual abuse materials; whereas, the
latter embroils the exposure of children to pornography and other sexually
explicit content.

Just recently, some children were exposed to online interactions which

caused public alarm among educators and parents, e.g., sextortion, naked
pictures/videos for sale. These acts should be blatantly condemned and dealt
with urgency and seriousness. Indeed, online child protection should be
everyone’s concern; it has become a critical social issue that needs to be acted
upon especially during this pandemic.

To proactively arrest these risks, the following enabling mechanisms

must be established in schools, viz: capacity building, technology and
policy. Hence, the ensuing questions should be aptly answered. Does my
school have sessions in order to raise awareness of teachers, students and
parents to RECOGNIZE and ADDRESS the online abuse of students? Do we have
internet filters installed in our school internet connection and/or computer
terminals? Does my school have a localized Child Protection Policy (CPP) which
integrates cybersafety and anti-bullying/cyberbullying provisions?

If the foregoing mechanisms are institutionalized in schools, then, at the

very least, we are assured of a safer cyberspace among our learners. Hence,
may we embrace these remarkable online safeguards to warrant a more
effective online child protection effort.
