The Milan Beautification Commission has selected four beautification winners for the month of August. The commissions purpose is to reward residents within the city limits who help keep Milan beautiful. The Milan Garden Club also gives recognition to two winners in surrounding areas. Commission winners are generally nominated for the award by commission members. However, residents are invited to submit nominations, Barbara Gardinier, commission chairwoman said. Thats exactly how Charlotte and Eric Stuebben received their award. Neighbor Carol Elkins was so impressed with the Stuebbens hard work and the big improvements they made to their home and yard that they nominated them to receive the award. The commission agreed with Elkins and presented the homeowners with a letter of appreciation, a certificate of recognition and placed a sign in their yard acknowledging their efforts, as they do with all winners. Elkins was pleased to learn her neighbor was among the commissions August winners. Elkins said she was new to the community and was impressed with the changes to the home and the pride she saw her neighbors take in their property. They started by building a new porch, Elkins said, The place just kept getting prettier and prettier. Elkins wasnt the only one to notice the improvements. Homeowner Charlotte Stuebben said people stop in the middle of the road to admire the brightly-colored plants. Im afraid someone will have an accident as we live on a curve here in the road, she said. She admitted it pleased her to receive the compliments. Stuebben recently retired from Kroger Co. after working in flower design for more than 20 years and turned her attention to her own flowers. Old bushes were removed from the front of the house and Stuebben created a small courtyard entrance complete with a decorative wroughtiron fence. I finally found time to work on my own yard and flowers, she said.

Bjorn Nylund attended the Backstreet Cruizers Carfest Saturday in Wilson Memorial Park. Bjorns uncle, Bob DeJongle, brought his nephew who is visiting from Florida to the show. to a good cause, Gilson said. Michelle Bergeron stopped in so her children, Brooke, 3, and 5-yearold Christopher could see the Cruizers replica of Thomas the Tank Engine, an animated childrens TV character, and be photographed. The children are fans of the train, seeing it featured in Milans annual Christmas parade delivering Santa Claus, Bergeron said. Both children liked seeing Thomas, but Christopher was more vocal. Ive heard his bell ring before, he said. Bergerson spotted the engine and said she had to bring the children into the park. Once there, she was surprised to find her uncle, Herb Priest of Monroe, had entered the competition with his 1932 customized, three-window Ford coupe. David DuShane, another uncle was showing her grandfather, William DuShanes classic 1960 Mercury, nine-passenger, four-door station wagon. DuShane was the original

here was something to enjoy for all ages Saturday at the 15th annual Backstreet Cruizers Carfest held in Milans Wilson Memorial Park. Classic cars, 1950s rock music played by Doug, the Backstreet Cruizers disc jockey and later music compliments of radio personality Bubba, from the W4 Country 102.9, who broadcasted live and emceed the event, were among the highlights. Vendors and organizations sold ice cream, barbecue and drinks, with many raising funds for charities. Children visited Thomas the Tanker and played in the parks play structure. The Cruizers host the competitive classic car show and donate the proceeds to charity. This year, the group donated to the American Diabetes Association, said Linda Gilson, club secretary. We love what we do, which is making new friends and giving money
