(Chapter 3) File Management

This document discusses file management in an operating system. It covers organizing files and folders, viewing their properties, and changing views. It also discusses file types, naming conventions, and creating, renaming, selecting, sorting, copying, moving, and deleting files and folders. Additionally, it covers different types of storage media like hard disks, SSDs, USB drives, and cloud storage. It explains units of storage capacity like KB, MB, GB, and TB. Finally, it discusses compressing and extracting compressed files and folders to save space.

Chapter 3

File Management
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Understand how an OS organizes drives, folders, and files,
and display their properties
2. Change view to display files and folders like tiles, icons,
list, and details.
3. Identify common file types and recognize good practice in
folder, file naming.
4. Create/ rename/ select/ sort/ copy/ move/ delete files and
folders.
5. Identify the main types of storage media, and view
available space.
6. Identify file size, folder size, storage capacity
measurements (KB, MB, GB, TB)
7. Understand the purpose of file, folder compression/
Compress & extract compressed files, folders.
Introducing Files and Folders

All documents and applications that are

created, saved or installed on a computer
are called files, which are stored in
folders (AKA directories) & subfolders.
Files and folders are stored on specific
drives.
File Explorer
File explorer is a term most commonly used to
describe the file management of the OS.

The File Explorer window is divided into two

sections, namely: the Navigation pane & the
Content pane.

The Preview pane, of any file will be displayed

on the right side of the File Explorer window.
Storage and Compression -
Main Types of Storage Media
◼ Internal Hard Disk - the most common
storage devices for computers.
They store data in a permanent form,
and retain information when
there is power failure.

• External Hard Disk – Portable and can

be connected to different computers by
means of USB cable.
Storage and Compression -
Main Types of Storage Media
◼ Solid State Hard Drives (SSD) – are hard drives that
contain no moving parts. Basically, a big microchip that.
SSDs have much faster data transfers.

Main Types of Storage Media
◼ USB Flash Drive (Flash Disk) –
is a removable & rewritable data
storage device with a USB
(Universal Serial Bus) connector.

◼ Network Drives – (AKA remote drive) is a disk or tape

drive connected to a server in a network that is shared by
many users

◼ CD-ROM Drive
(Compact Disk Read-Only
Memory) - are the standard
medium for distributing large
quantities of information in a
reliable package.

◼ CD-R (Compact Disk Recordable) and CD_RW

(Compact Disk Rewritable) Disk Drives
 A CD-Writer, is used when you want to write to (store data on) a
CD disk
 CD-R disks can be written to once & the data cannot be erased.
 CD-RW disks, can be written to more than once.

◼ DVD-ROM (Digital Versatile Disk) – similar to CDs
except more information can be stored on.

◼ Blu-Ray Disk – developed to enable high-definition video

(HD), as well as storing large amounts of data.

◼ Memory Card – Power free

storage mostly used with
digital cameras, cellular phones,
music players…

◼ Online File Storage – (Internet hosting Service) safe

storage that does not involve a personal storage that can
be damaged or lost.
Storage Capacity Measurements

 Both RAM and hard disk capacity are measured in bytes,

as are files and folder sizes.

 Computers operate using a binary number system

 the word bit (short for the words Binary Digit) is the
smallest storage unit. Bits have only two possible values:
0 and 1.

File and Folder Compression

◼ it is the reduction in size of data in order to save

space or transmission time.

◼ Compression software, e.g. WinZip, lets you reduce

the overall number of bits and bytes in a file or folder
so that it can be transmitted faster or take up less
space on a disk (by eliminating redundancy).
