Seafarers are person who have been employed by an ownership to do ship service on board a
ship at sea. Work performed by person taking part in the ship operation and maintenance as well
as provisioning of those on board, there are variety of professions and ranks, and each of those
roles carries unique responsibilities which are integral to the successful operation of the ship.
The following is listing of professions and ranks. A traditional ships complement can be divided
into three categories the deck department, engineering department and catering/steward
department.
The Deck department is an roles and organizational team on board a ship its includes the Captain
or Master is the highest responsible officer, is a high grade licensed mariner who holds ultimate
command and responsibilities of a merchant vessel, the Chief officer second-in command after
the ship’s master who primarily responsibilities are the vessels cargo operation, its stability, and
supervising the deck crew, the Second officer typically the navigation officer and maintaining
the chart and navigational equipment, the Third officer is usually a safety officer who’s
responsible for the safety equipment, fire fighting equipment, lifeboats, and emergency systems,
a Radio officer is a person who hold and appropriate certificate issued and recognized by the
administration under the provision of the Radio regulation, a Deck cadet is marine transportation
graduate must carry out one year training on a board ship’s under chief mate and works
accordingly, the boatswain or bosun is in charge of the unlicensed crew and the deck hands
overall foreman and day workers employed in general duties. The AB seaman or able seaman is
a watch stander in deck department at sea ab watch standers duties include standing watch as
helmsman and lookout while the ship is not underway, a watch stander may be called but upon to
stand security related watches, such a gangway watch a anchor watch, the Ordinary seaman
performs upkeep duties includes scaling, buffing, and painting decks and superstructures.
The Engine department is an organizational unit on board ship that is responsible for the
operation, maintenance. and repair of the propulsion systems includes, the chief engineer is a
senior licensed marine engineer officer responsible for the mechanical propulsion and the
operation and maintenance of the mechanical and electrical installation of the ship, the Second
engineer or first assistant engineer is responsible for supervising the daily maintenance and
operation of the engine department, the Third engineer or a second assistant is usually in charge
of boilers, fuel, auxiliary engines, condensate, and feed systems and the third highest marine
engineer in rank, the Fourth engineer or third assistant is usually responsible for electrical,
sewage treatment, lube oil, bilge, and oily water separation systems, An engine cadet(apprentice)
must carry out one year training on board ships, executing task of an officer of the watch under
the supervision of senior officers, the Electrician is a licensed master electrician who also known
as electro-technical officer(ETO) responsible for the maintenance of the electrical and electronic
installation of the ship.
The Catering department or galley is responsible for the preparation and serving foods to
crew on board of a ship , Includes the Chief steward directs, instructs, and assigns personnel
performing such function as preparing meals, cleaning and maintaining officers’ quarters, the
Chief cook is a senior unlicensed crew member working in the steward department of a ship and
participates in the preparation and serving of meals, the Assistant steward assist the chief steward
by removing stock such as food, On larger vessel, the catering department is headed by the Chief
purser and managed by assistant pursuer under the pursuer are the department head such as chief
cook, head waiter, head barman, etc.
There are Level of responsibility under by the chain of command, The management level are
senior officers on board ship serving master, chief mate, chief engineer, or second engineer, the
Operational level are the junior officers on board ship serving as officer-in-charge of
navigational or engineering watch or designated duty engineer for periodically unmanned
machinery spaces and maintaining direct control over the performance of all function within the
designated area of responsibility, the Support level are ratings forming part of a navigation or
engine watch, performing assigned task, duties and responsibilities on board a seagoing ship
under the direction of an individual serving in the operational or management level.
