Av Script Sheet For History of Gaming Assignment
*This sheet will need to be embedded in your Weebly page for the History Of Gaming
assignment in order to pass*
Task 1 of 3:
Introduction: write the script that you will be recording for your introduction here. Introduce yourself
and say what the documentary will be about. Maybe make a statement that you are going to challenge or
ask a question that you’re going to try and answer through the course of the documentary and in the
conclusion.
- Hi, my name is Kade, and this is the top 10 games in my history of gaming.
- In this list, I will be exploring why each game is important to me and why I believe it was successful.
- The question I will be asking in this list is: Is the success of video games measured in how much
money they make?
- I will provide my answer to this in my conclusion to the list.
- SOFT MUSIC WILL BE PLAYING OVER THE TOP IF THE ENTIRE DOCUMENTARY.
Task 2 of 3:

highest grossing arcade game of 1980.
This year it was overtaken by Pacman,
this means the game was very
successful and a big hit.
- This game was in development for 1
year and 5 months and it’s a funny
story on how the character Pacman
came about. The creator of the game,
Toru Iwatani, ordered a pizza and
when he removed a slice, with a
mouthful of hot pizza, the character
was staring right at him.
- And when we’re talking successful,
this game isn’t just about money as it
was also very playable because all you
had to do is go to an arcade and play
on a machine. This game was also
made more playable in future as it was
added to phones, tablets, laptops,
they even integrated it into Google.
- Now more about the gameplay itself,
Pacman is an action maze chase video
game, this means the character is
navigating a restricted environment
while being chased by AI enemies. You
are playing as a small yellow avatar
that collects little pellets which add to
your score, to complete a level you
must collect all pellets on that level.
There are special pellets called ‘power
pellets’, these pellets act as powerups
and means that while activated,
Pacman can eat the ghosts and they
run from him, eating ghosts gives you
more score than normal pellets do.
- A bit more about the behind-the-
scenes stuff, an incredible amount of
programming went into the ghosts in
Pacman. This was because if the
ghosts were set to simply chase the
player, it would be too easy for
pacman. To solve this issue, they gave
each ghost a personality. Here they
are: Blinky, the red ghost chases
Pacman directly, Pinky the pink ghost
targets a position that is 32 pixels
ahead of Pacman’s mouth, Inky, the
blue ghost chases at mirror point,
Clyde, the orange ghost has a
completely random chase pattern.
- Did you know, Pacman has a kill
screen on level 256 due to the
limitations of 8-bit code.
- Pacman was the first original gaming
mascot.
- This game did a multitude of things
very well. However, for me, one thing
sticks out, Pacman was trying to reach
a female audience as well as a male
one. This is because most games those
days were made about sport or war,
so Toru Iwatani made one of the first
games to ever support female gamers.
To me, this seems like a huge
advancement in the history of gaming.
- Now to talk more business, this game,
within one year, sold more than
100,000 arcade units, which grossed
more than $1 billion. I think this is a
huge deal because that’s an insane
amount of money that gives the
company to ability to continue
developing games and releasing more
great games, which they went ahead
and did.
- To answer my ultimate question about
Pacman, I believe it wasn’t just money
that made this game successful, but it
certainly made a huge impact on its
success.
Mario Bros.
- Next up on my list is Mario Bros,
published by Nintendo in march 1983
and released later on in the year in
June for Japan.
- This game was a platformer that was
created by two men called Shigeru
Miyamoto and Gunpei Yokoi, the same
two leading developers of Donkey
Kong.
- Now this game was successful to me
because it has aged extremely well
and has lasted a hell of a long time.
This is helped by the multiplayer mode
in the game which allows you to enjoy
the game with a friend.
- How does this game work? Well the
game features two plumbers, Mario
and Luigi having to investigate the
sewers of New York after strange
creatures have been appearing down
there. The objective is to defeat all of
the enemies in each phase/level. The
mechanics of Mario Bros consists of
only running and jumping. I think that
simplicity is a thing that this game has
done amazingly, they’ve included new
features such as a new turtle enemy
but have kept the game so simple still
that people can easily pick it up and
play it. This for me makes games really
enjoyable although it really depends
on what sort of gamer you are, some
people like the super complicated
stuff.
- Anyways, back to Mario Bros, the
game did not win any awards of note
or any that I could find. Despite this,
from release to July, the arcade
platformer had sold 2,000 arcade
cabinets which was a decent success, it
also went on to do extremely well in
American arcades as time went on.
- I believe that the game could have
way more successful if it hadn’t been
released during the video game crash
of 1983, this was really unfortunate
timing.
- Mario Bros aroused competitiveness
between players as people would
compete who could do levels, faster,
who could get the highest score, etc.
The current world record holder of the
Mario Bros highest score is Steve
Kleisath with 5,424,920 points.
- Have you wondered why there are
also pipes in Mario games? This is
because in Donkey Kong, Mario looked
like a plumber but was actually a
carpenter. It was in Mario Bros that
Shigeru and Gunpei changed Mario’s
profession to a plumber.
- Following the pipe theme, Miyamoto
thought it would be best to set the
game in New York as he described
their sewer system as ‘a labyrinth of
subterranean network of sewage
pipes’. This theme has stuck to this
even today in 2023. That is 40 Years!!
- Considering the time this game was
made, there were creative enemies
such as the green turtle that was
added into the game, this enemy can
only hit from below. The game
challenges you with enemies that can
only be hit from certain angles, this
makes the platform we very
interesting to play.
- Despite the game’s potential not being
reached on release in the video game
crash of 1983, I believe it was
successful as it brought multiplayer
and new challenges to players around
the world. It has also lasted until today
so I would call Mario Bros a huge
success.
- So the answer to my ultimate question
with Mario Bros would be that money
made does not define its success for
me at least. This is due to the way it’s
aged and the different features added.
SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2
- Moving on from Mario Bros, next up
we have Sonic the Hedgehog 2. This
game was developed by SEGA
Technical Institute and published by
SEGA on the 21st November 1992.
- This game was developed by
Masaharu Yoshii and what a game it
was. This development team consisted
of Japanese and American developers
which is interesting in my opinion, I
love the diversity in the team, it makes
the game that extra bit special.
- The team had 9 months to develop the
game which, if you think about it, isn’t
that long. However, the development
team working on this game was a lot
bigger than the first game with 20
developers, rather than a team of 7 in
the first game.
- Anyways, more about the gameplay,
this game is a side-scrolling platform
game, the story is like the first game.
Doctor Robotnik is seeking out the
chaos emeralds in order to power is
space station, The Death Egg. In order
to do so, he traps animals on West
Island in aggressive robots. As Sonic
the Hedgehog, you go through levels
and collect the chaos emeralds and
stop Robotnik (more commonly
known as today as Dr Eggman).
- The game is very good with its
variation of movement and stunts,
there are springs, slopes, bottomless
pits, vertical loops. In addition to this
insane amount of movement, you, the
player, navigates this at high speeds
while dodging hazards like water and
spikes. Doesn’t that sound just
amazing!
- A lot of people seemed to agree with
me as this game had retailers preorder
2.2 million copies of the game by
October 1992. It became the fastest
selling game in UK history with
750,000 copies sold in a single day,
grossing £27,000,000 (equivalent to
£74,405,240 due to inflation). Isn't
that just insane! It’s crazy how quickly
the video game industry had evolved
even by just 1992!
- Despite its popularity, SEGA didn’t
think it would be this popular before
development as they were meant to
start it two months earlier, but they
held it off for two months, leaving only
9 months for development. However,
this didn’t stop the team from making
one of the best games in history.
- This game was big for the community
as there was competitiveness in the
speed at which the game is completed.
The term is now called speedrunning;
the quickest speedrun for Sonic the
Hedgehog 2 is 12m and 59s by the
name ‘eandis’ from Russia. People are
still competing for this title today in
2023, I think it’s crazy how much this
game brought the community
together. If you wanted to watch the
speedrun, it will be included on this
page.
- About my ultimate question, to me, I
believe that this game was more
money orientated in terms of its
success. This is because it became the
fastest selling game in UK history
which is an insane achievement. It also
grossed a stupid amount of money in
just one day in just one country.
Despite this, the game did bring the
community together and was very
enjoyable, so it wasn’t just money
orientated.
HALF-LIFE
- Next up on my list is a game called Half
Life.
- This game was released on 19th
November 1998.
- This game is a first person shooter
developed by Valve, who you may
know as they have developed huge
products such as steam and the Valve
index.
- This game was made because Valve
was disappointed with the FPS genre
at the time so they wanted to design
an immersive world rather than a
‘shooting gallery’. This is something
Half-Life did very well, they innovated
the FPS genre and influenced other
developers.
- The game was published by Sierra
Studios and was ported to Windows,
Linux, OS X, and the PlayStation 2.
- Anyways, enough about the
background, what is this game all
about? Well, you, the player, assume
the role of Gordon Freeman who is a
scientist who must escape the Black
Mesa Research Facility as it was
invaded by aliens. This is done using
combat, exploration and puzzle-
solving.
- This fantastic FPS game won more
than 50 PC “game of the year” awards.
What made this a ton more exciting is
that it was Valve’s debut product to
the video game market. How amazing
is that!
- The FPS had sold 212,173 copies of the
game by 1999 with $8.6 million in
revenue in that time frame.
- As well as selling a large number of
copies, the game influenced so many
developers and people that extra
content was made (mods) by fans to
make the experience even more fun.
- Some of these mods turned into stand-
alone games like Counter-Strike for
example.
- Valve care about their community so
much that when mods were being
made by fans, some of the more
popular ones got offered help by Valve
themselves which is just insane!
- The story in Half-Life is developed
using scripted sequences rather than
cutscenes, this keeps the player in
control of the first person camera
viewpoint. This adds a little bit more
immersion and there is only one very
short cutscene in the game.
- By 2008, Valve had sold 9 million
copies of Half Life.
SUPER MARIO 64
- Next up on my list is Super Mario 64, a
3D platformer game that used a free-
moving camera which was very new
for 3D games at the time. You play as
Mario and go through singleplayer
courses.
- This game’s development was directed
by Shigeru Miyamoto. He is in the list
once again as he is a brilliant
developer and has a fantastic creative
mind.
- One thing this game did very well was
that each level was a vast sandbox in
which everything could be interacted
with, this lets the player explore with
excitement.
- There was also a good range of
movement spanning from crawling to
wall jumping.
- The ‘hub world’ is a place consisting of
3 floors; these floors being in Princess
Peach’s castle. The main quest is to
look for paintings that take Mario into
different courses that give him power
stars; when at least 70/120 stars are
collected, Mario can then go up into
Bowser’s lair and defeat him to get
Peach released from his prison.
- The game was developed or 1 year and
8 months, so the development team
put a lot of work into this game and
definitely got the reward that was
deserved, or should I say rewards.
Because over the span of 2 years, the
game won 13 awards; some being
Game of the year, Best Graphics,
Adventure Game of the Year, and Best
Nintendo 64 Game of the year.
- The game was released on the
Nintendo 64 and grossed $140 million
within the first 3 months, which is
once again, another massive financial
success in my history of gaming list.
I’m starting to see a correlation here…
- Did you know that this was the first
ever 3D entry into the Mario
franchise?
- Also, this game got amazing feedback,
I was scrolling on the Nintendo Life
website for at least 30 minutes and I
couldn’t find a single negative review,
only positive feedback. Quite clearly,
I’m not the only one to think this was
one of the best games in history.
- However, is this success all down to
financial performance? Or is there
more to it than that? Well, for me, I
think that Super Mario 64 has amazing
gameplay and is so innovative.
Therefore, I believe that it’s success is
more down to how influential the
game was and how good the gameplay
is. Despite this, many could argue it is
successful mainly because of its
financial performance but in my
opinion, that’s not the case. Most
would argue that it was a bit of both
though so you could really go either
way with it.
GOD OF WAR (2005)
- Now moving into the 2000s, this is
very exciting and I would love to start
this decade off with an amazing game:
God Of War.
- Developed by Santa Monica Studios
and published By Sony, this hack and
slash, action-adventure game hit the
market like a meteor and was released
in NA on March 22nd 2005 and in EU on
July 8th.
- This exciting game had sold 1 million
copies by July 2006, grossing $43
million in the US alone! That is just
ridiculous. Let alone worldwide, where
they had sold more then 4.3 million
copies! Those are insane numbers!
- The game is loosely based on Greek
mythology which is one of my
favourite parts as I am interested in
that already and I just love the story of
this game.
- It is a singleplayer story game in which
you could play at your own pace and
enjoy the game in your own way. The
game has checkpoints at which it saves
your progress which makes the game
very playable because when you hop
back onto you PlayStation 2, you could
just carry on from where you left off.
Very convenient!
- The game uses the Kinetica engine and
is combined with an amazing combat
system which allows the player to feel
a degree of unparalleled freedom. No
other game has let me feel this way
and I think it is a hard feeling to
recreate. That is what makes this
game so special to me.
- The story consists of Kratos, the
player, who serves the Greek gods of
Olympus. He is a successful
bloodthirsty spartan captain until he is
met face to face by death when he
fought a barbarian king. He then calls
to the Greek god of war, Ares; Kratos
promised to serve Ares if he would
spare his men and provide the power
to destroy their enemies. Ares agreed
and bonded the blades of chaos to
Kratos. Kratos then waged war at the
behest of Ares, eventually leading an
attack in a village occupied by
worshippers of Athena. However, Ares
secretly moved Kratos’ family to the
village and due to his blinding
bloodlust, Kratos killed his family. This
upset Kratos and he swore vengeance
on Olympus. Through the guidance of
Athena, he learns he needs an artifact
called Pandora’s box in order to grant
the ability to kill gods. Eventually,
without spoiling too much, Kratos kills
Ares and gets his revenge.
- I think that is such an amazing
storylines and Kratos is my favourite
game character of all time without a
doubt.
- Deservingly, this game Won game of
the year, best fantasy video game
release, and best music of the year. All
of which were awarded in 2006, it also
won GOTY in 2005 and it was named
‘best action game’, and David Jaffe,
the director, won designer of the year
that year too. So a lot of awards going
to a very well-made game.
- To me, this game was only successful
due to its amazing storyline and
characters. The development of Kratos
is fantastic and the way the story plays
out is so interesting, All in all I would
rate this game 1,000/10.
Counter Strike
- Next up for the 2000s is actually a
game released on 9th November 2000.
- It is a game called Counter Strike and
it’s a tactical first person shooter.
- This game was developed by multiple
people being Valve, Hidden Path
Entertainment, Turtle Rock Studios,
Gearbox software, Ritual
Entertainment, and Nexon.
- The game was also published by
multiple people being Valve, Microsoft
Game Studios, Sierra Entertainment,
Namco, and Nexon.
- It was released on Windows, MacOS,
Linux, PlayStation 3, Xbox, and Xbox
360.
- Anyways that’s enough listing, what is
this game really about? Well, this
game is related to another game in
this list. Counter strike was originally a
mod for Half Life but the rights to the
game were acquired by Valve in 2000.
- In the game, there are two opposing
teams – The terrorists and the Counter
terrorists – that compete in game
modes to complete objectives, such as
securing a certain location or planting
a bomb/defusing a bomb. At the end
of every round, players are awarded
currency depending on their
performance in the previous round.
With this money, they can buy certain
weapons depending on how much
they have, this can range from a desert
eagle, to an AK47. There are also
certain weapons that only can be used
depending on what side you are on.
- This game was a perfect introduction
to competitive play on a large scale. It
is one of the most popular eSports
games in history with 45 teams from
around the world who come together
to compete for a prize pool.
- It is one of the most influential FPS
games in history.
- This is reflected by its sales, As of
August 2011, it had sold over 25
million units.
- Counter Strike is unique due to its
unrivalled creation of recoil patterns
for the weapons in the game, payment
system, and multiple objective
gameplay.
- This was a very playable game too, as
you can get into a match with or
without friends with absolute ease
and without having to spend hours in
front of your computer.
- More on the eSports side of things, a
group of friends in Sweden would
come together and play LAN games
against each other. This little
competition grew into something
unimaginably big… Dreamhack. This is
the first ever major competition for
Counter Strike!
- In my opinion, this game was
successful because of the influence it
had on other FPS games made in the
future and its huge competitive scene.
This sparked competitiveness in a way
no one had seen before. In the future,
massive tournaments were made for
multiple games like CSGO, Valorant
and much more. This game was so
unbelievably influential, this was the
core of its success.
Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
- Next up, is a huge game that almost all
of you will know… Call Of Duty
Modern Warfare 2.
- This game was massive and forever
will be known as one of the best COD
games to ever be released. It was
published by Activision.
- The legendary title was released on
November 10th, 2009 and took the
community by storm with 4.7 million
units sold in the US and the UK
combined within the first 24 hours of
full release. That’s $310 million in 24
hours, that is $12.9 million an hour.
How insane is that?!
- This game’s development was directed
by a man called Jason West and his
game had just made $550 million in
sales in just 5 days. If I were him, I
would be over the moon.
- This game had 8 million players in the
first 5 days and won the following
awards: Best action game,
Outstanding Real Time Visuals in a
video game, best first-person shooter,
game of the year, Best Xbox 360 game
of 2009, action game of the year, and
shooter of the year.
- The game was ported to Windows,
PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, MacOS,
PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
- You, the player, in the campaign are
controlling 5 different people from a
first person perspective but the player
mainly controls Sergeant Gary “Roach”
Sanderson, a British member of the
special forces unit called “Task Force
141”. You part take in missions against
the Russian extremist called
“Makarov” in order to save the US.
- Did you know that the game was
originally announced as Call of Duty 6?
They changed the name before
release.
MINECRAFT
- Now I have saved the best for last as
this game, to me, is the best game in
history. Minecraft
- This game was Developed and
Published by Mojang Studios with the
designers of Jens “Jeb” Bergersten and
Markus “Notch” Persson.
- It was released on Windows, macOS,
Linux, and 16 other devices consisting
of smartphones, tablets, the Raspberry
Pi etc.
- The game is a singleplayer and
multiplayer sandbox survival game
that works using a virtually infinite
world that is procedurally generated
as players explore it. The game
achieves this astonishing effect using
“chunks”; these chunks are split-up
pieces of the world that are generated
relative to the player’s location.
- The fun doesn’t stop there as this
game’s mod community is as infinite
as it’s world generation. There are
countless mods out there that can
extend the game and can let the
player play Minecraft in any way they
wish to.
- This is a very special game as the
player can interpret and play the game
in any way they want to. It is very
interesting to see how each player
plays the game as no one is the same.
This is achieved with the different
modes where the player can have
cheats, flight, infinite resources, god
mode and to not eat with the use of
creative mode. Or the player can jump
into hardcore where the game is stuck
on the hardest difficulty permanently
and if you die once, the world is gone
and you cannot respawn…
- I personally play the game on the
hardest difficulty in survival and I love
to build. This is because there are
infinite possibilities with building in
this game. I also love doing this in
survival because I enjoy the challenge
and the grind.
- Enough about gameplay and more
about numbers, as of April 2021, the
game has sold over 238 million copies.
This is stupid numbers. Unimaginable
amounts of sales have been produced
by this game, that I would go as far to
say it is a piece of art. It is the most
sold game in history today, it overtook
Tetris in 2014.
- It has won 11 awards ranging from
Best Gaming community award in
2021 to game of the year award in
2012.
- You name it, this game has won or
done it. There is no contest for me,
this game takes the crown.
- Moving onto my ultimate question,
this game was stupidly successful
financially. However, my love for the
game is produced by the community,
the development team and just the
pure enjoyment I receive when playing
this masterpiece of software.
- To round-off the last game on my list,
here are some creations some people
have made in Minecraft.
Task 3 of 3:
Conclusion: write the script that you will be recording for your conclusion here. revisit your initial
question or statement from the introduction, recap some highlights of the games you’ve studied that
support your question/statement and suggest whether the statement is supported or what the answer to
the question was.
