- A bodyguards priority is to ensure the safety of their clients.

Clientele can be celebrities,

politicians, government officials, wealthy families
- Bodyguards assess and prevent possible threats and security risks for their client
- The duties of a bodyguard can vary depending on the status of the client
- Bodyguards may work alone, or may be part of a security unit
- Most parts of the job are physical but bodyguards perform a range of other duties to help keep
their clients safe and comfortable
- To become a bodyguard, you need a high school diploma because that ensures that
bodyguards can read, write, and communicate effectively with clients
- Some employers may prefer candidates with a diploma or bachelors degree in security related
field

agency
- Those training courses help ensure that bodyguards are physically capable of handling the
responsibilities that come with the job
- Monthly training sessions can include things like hand to hand combat, risk assessment,
firearm training, strategic planning to areas, body language studies
- Naturally you want a clean track record as you will have to pass a background check
- Potential bodyguards must have a clean criminal record and be at least 18 years of age
- Different provinces/cities/countries may set additional requirements or make exceptions
under certain specific conditions
- Before being able to obtain a license, the individual must pass several requires courses and
exams
- The assessment may test your skills, fitness, and knowledge about the duties of a bodyguard
before the government grants you a license
- Once the license is obtained, you can work as a bodyguard
- Typical responsibilities include the following: conducting inspections, performing
background checks, noting suspicious behaviour, driving the client, identifying potential
safety risks, monitoring access
- Conducting inspections: inspecting any buildings your client may enter for the clients safety.
The bodyguards job is to predict any potential dangers and secure the area. Check for possible
explosives, harmful devices, other potential threats to confirm that the site is safe before
escorting your client into the building
- Background checks: confirming the identity of new employees to make sure they arent
potential threats to your clients safety aka background checks. Usually is done by asking
specific questions to make sure that their answers match the results of your personal search
- Noting suspicious behaviour: bodyguards usually accompany their clients to various
events/programs. Bodyguards remain alert to detect any sus movement or behaviour in the
area during the thing. They know how to identify potentially harmful behaviour and are
observant enough to notice any odd behaviour or conversations related to the client. The
focused observation of the area can sometimes deter potential attackers
- Driving client: typically the bodyguards will also be personal chauffeurs for their clients and
will be responsible for planning the travel routes to ensure that they arrive at their destination
safely. It may be necessary to make a quick escape with a client if you identify any potential
dangers. To prepare for such a situation, you note all building entrances and exits when
driving your client to or from the location. Bodyguards are adaptable and skilled enough to
remove their client to safety before the threat escalates. Jobs that involve driving clients away
from potentially harmful situations may require additional vehicle specific training
- Identifying safety risks: part of the job is evaluation of the strength of the security procedures
around the clients home workplace and other essential areas. They may assess issues with the
security protocol in such areas and recommend changes as necessary. They also typically meet
with security operatives in the clients workplace or home to review safety measures.
Bodyguards can then explain these safety procedures to the clients employees and family
- Monitoring access: bodyguards may be responsible for controlling access to their clients. They
can verify the identity of anyone who wants to see their clients. Bodyguards may have a list of
names of people allowed entry into the clients home, office, or social event, and can limit access
to the people included on the list. As part of the security protocol, bodyguards may
recommend the installation of surveillance cameras to monitor the clients environment.
Bodyguards may also ensure that anyone highly motivated to see the client are kept at a
distance from the person
- Skills that are necessary for being a bodyguard: critical thinking, professionalism, good
communication, alertness, good driving skills, confidentiality
- Confidentiality: bodyguards spend a lot of time with their clients. They will often hear private

the clients personal life. Its vital for bodyguards to stay professional in those situations so that
their clients can trust them, both to maintain privacy and to keep them safe
- Professionalism: although bodyguards spend a lot of time around their employees, its
important for them to remain professional and polite at all times. To carry out their duties
efficiently, bodyguards can maintain a respectful distance from their clients. They can also
speak courteously and avoid any activities that can reduce their alertness or ability to protect
their client
- Good communication: while ensuring the safety of the clients, bodyguards may communicate
with other people. bodyguards might meet with other security operatives or the clients
employees to ensure the safety of their clients. They may also speak to people that want to gain
access to their clients. Its important that bodyguards can communicate effectively to perform
these duties efficiently. Strong communication skills might also be necessary when explaining
the details or severity of potential threats to clients
- Different jobs a bodyguard can work as: close-protection officer (who escorts the client),
driver-bodyguard, part of a unit that provides IED (Intelligent Electronic Device) detection,
specialize in protecting the children of VIP's from kidnapping and/or assassination
- Rcmp has a vip section that deals with politicians and presidents protection of them
- To be a bodyguard member of 5 years minimum for rcmp
- Wouldn’t start off immediately guarding a person
- Would start off with perimeter work ie guarding stairwells below and down the person
- For rcmp you get full benefits for VIP, like medical and dental coverage, disability, and a
retirement plan
- Private agencies probably not. Some benefits maybe, like dental
- Work may take place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Most bodyguards work in teams and do 6
or 8 hour shifts, but others may have longer irregular hours. They must be prepared to
accommodate the client at all times. This includes travelling to all parts of the world. A
bodyguard may work with a celebrity in los angeles, the children of a wealthy family in mexico
city, or a vip executive in the middle east. Wherever the job takes them, they must be ready for
anything. They may spend the day skiing, avoiding bullets from armed robbers in nyc, or
searching vehicles for bomb in dubai
- Salary: national average wage of a bodyguard is $61,088 in Canada per year as of the most
recent 2023 statistics. It can be as low as 40k or as high as half a million (500k) if the
bodyguards are in charge of big celebrities
- The salary of a bodyguard can vary according to their skills, level of experience, and training
background
- Big time celebrity bodyguards get paid a lot more than politician celebrities
- For a long time, female bodyguards were rare. But in recent years, they’ve become more and
more prevalent in the bodyguard business. According to one female bodyguard, the appeal is
largely their ability to blend in
- Female guards appeal to Arab clientele in particular, who for religious reasons are
uncomfortable with unrelated men being around female family members. Female bodyguards
are also popular in China and Russia
- The vetting process for hiring bodyguards is intense; you’re not merely hiring them for their
defensive capabilities, but for their loyalty as well. Assassinations in bodyguarding aren’t
frequent, but they have happened in a number of instances. Perhaps the most notable instance
in recent history was the assassination of Indira Gandhi, who was shot dead on October 31,
1984, by bodyguards Satwant Singh and Beant Singh, who were Sikhs
- While Satwant had only recently been employed as a guard, Beant had been known to Gandhi
for a decade. The two men were taken into custody, where they apparently tried to attack
other officers and were gunned down. Beant was killed and Satwant survived—only to be
hanged later. The assassination was a retaliation due to clashes between the small Sikh minority
of India and the Hindu majority.
