3. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM.

When learning a new language, grammar is undoubtedly one of the most difficult aspects to

master, due to the differences between our Spanish mother tongue and the language we want

to learn, in this case English.

Understanding English grammar correctly will save us a lot of headaches when we advance

in the process of studying this language.

Knowing comparatives and superlatives in English is important because we constantly

encounter a great variety of things, products and people, and it is useful to be able to compare

in English in order to determine which one is better, or to highlight the most important and

characteristic attributes of them.

In this contextualized collaborative work we will explain the proper use and meaning of

comparatives and superlatives.

5

4. CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK.

4.1 ¿What are comparatives and superlatives?

The comparative serves to indicate a degree of comparison between two nouns, and indicates

that one of the nouns has an attribute to a greater or lesser degree than the one to which it is

compared.

The superlative is the degree of comparison between two or more nouns, or between a

singular noun and a plural or collective noun, indicating that the attribute has the highest

degree among those with which it is compared.

4.2 ¿How are comparatives and superlatives used?

● Adjectives.

The comparative:

As its name indicates, we use the comparative in English to compare two objects or persons.

Its structure is:

Subject + verb + adjective in comparative degree + than + another object.

Examples:
6

★ My house is bigger than hers. than hers.

★ This box is smaller than the one I lost.

★ Your dog runs faster than Jim's dog.

The superlative:

The superlative in English is used to highlight a characteristic of an object, person or animal

that makes it different from the rest of the group in which it is found. Its structure is: Subject

+ verb + the + adjective in superlative degree + object.

Examples:

★ My house is the largest one in our neighborhood.

★ This is the smallest box I've ever seen.

★ Your dog was the fastest of the race.

4.2.1 Rules for forming comparatives and superlatives.

It is important to understand that the way in which adjectives are used in this type of

sentences will depend on a simple rule based on the number of syllables that make up the

word.
7

● One-syllable adjectives.

In this case, the adjectives will end in "-er" for comparatives and in "-est" to write

superlatives. Also, keep in mind that if the adjective ends in consonant + vowel + consonant,

the last consonant must be repeated before adding the ending.

Adjective Comparative Superlative

Tall Taller Tallest

Large Larger Largest

Big Bigger Biggest

High Higher Highest

Fast Faster Fastest

Example:

★ John is taller than his brother / John is the tallest of his brothers.

★ That car is bigger than mine / That car is the biggest of the parking lot.
8

● Adjectives of three or more syllables.

Unlike the previous ones, these adjectives in English do not have an ending added to them.

Instead, the word "more" is placed before the adjective in the sentence in the case of

comparatives and "most" in the case of superlatives.

Adjective Comparative Superlative

Important more important most important

Expensive more expensive most expensive

Intelligent more intelligent most intelligent

Beautiful more beautiful most beautiful

For example:

★ Mike's project is more creative than Sara's. / The most creative project will win the

contest.
9

★ My house is more expensive than yours. / This is the most expensive house of the

neighborhood.

● Irregular adjectives.

There are also irregular adjectives in English, which are not governed by the rules mentioned

above. Some of these are:

Adjective Comparative Superlative

Good Better Best

Bad Worse Worst

Little Less Least

Much More Most

For example:

★ Today is the worst day I've had in a long time.

★ You play tennis better than I do.

10

★ This is the least expensive sweater in the store.

★ He won the most important race.

4.2.2 Grammatical rules for comparative and superlative adverbs.

● One-syllable adverbs form the comparative by adding -er and the superlative by

adding -est. If they end in -e, -st is added.

Example:

★ safe → safer → safest.

● If they end in a vowel followed by a consonant (except -w), the consonant is doubled.

Example:

★ fat → fatter → the fattest.

● With two-syllable adverbs ending in a consonant followed by -y, the -y is replaced by

-i and -er and -est is added.

Example:
11

★ easye → asier → the easiest.

● For the most adverbs of two or more syllable ending in -ly, use more and most instead

of -er and -est:

Example:

★ Quickly – more quickly, the most quickly.

★ Clearly – more clearly, the most clearly

Exception: early – earlier, the earliest.

of our contextualized collaborative work on comparatives and superlatives, their use,

definition and forms.

This technique can propose an objective judgment about the best option taking into account

the characteristics of the process, in an explanatory way to clarify with an analysis the

information offered by the bibliographic sources. For our work we collected documentary

information through research material, informative material, and also web pages. This

methodology allows us to become familiar with the subject in order to understand the

problem to be solved.

6. RESULTS.

using superlatives and comparatives.
