Welcome to the Music Grade 7 Self-Learning Module (SLM) on Music of Lowlands of
Luzon (Analyzing Musical Elements of Some Lowland Vocal and Instrumental
Music Selections)! This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by

characteristics, features), individually or together. The commonly used list of the main
elements includes pitch, timbre, texture, volume, duration and form. The elements of
music may be compared to the elements of art or design.

What is It
In analyzing the musical elements of Nvocal/instrumental music, first you have to
know and
understand the basic elements of music like Rhythm, Melody, Tempo, Form, Timbre,
Dynamics, Texture and Harmony. But take note that there are some elements NOT found
in a certain musical
piece/arrangement when performed. Below are meanings, descriptions and examples
that will further deepen your knowledge and understanding about the lesson.

Elements of Music
1. Rhythm - a regular repeated pattern of sounds on movement
Descriptions:
- with meters of 2’s, 3’s, 4’s – duple, triple, quadruple
-with time signature -2/4 3/4,4/4 , , etc.
-uses rhythmic pattern like:

2. Melody - a pleasing horizontal succession of musical notes that form the main
part of a song on a piece of music
Descriptions:
- with so-fa syllables like do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, do
- with pitch names – CDEFGABC
- with key signatures – major/minor, ex. C major, a minor
-Pitch refers to the highness or lowness of sounds
Example:
3. Tempo - the speed at which a musical piece is played or sung
Descriptions:
- speed of sound as: slow, moderate, fast. largo, presto, allegro, allegro
moderato, etc.
- mood – sad, joyful, angry, lively, etc

4. Form – structure of a musical composition


Descriptions:
- Unitary (1section)
Strophic form also called verse repeating form, chorus form AAA song
structure in which are verses or stanzas of the text are sung to the same musical
tune
-Binary or AB (2 sections), Tertiary or ABA-ABC (3sections), Rondo or ABACA (5 or
more sections)

5. Timbre – quality of the sound made by a particular voice or musical instrument


Descriptions:
Types of voices
Soprano – highest voice for female
Tenor – highest voice for male
Alto – lowest voice for female
Bass – lowest voice for male

For Rondalla instruments


Soprano part will represent for Banduria Instrument
Alto part will represent for Octavina Instrument
Tenor part will represent for Laud Instrument
Bass part will represent for Bajo de Arco Instrument

6. Dynamics – refers to the loudness or softness of a sound


Examples of musical symbols for dynamics
mf- mezzo forte – medium loud
f -forte – loud
ff - fortissimo – very loud
fff- fortississimo – very, very loud
mp- mezzo piano – medium soft
p- piano – soft
pp- pianissimo – very soft
ppp- pianississimo – very, very soft
- gradually decreasing in volume/loudness
- gradually increasing in volume/loudness
7. Texture – the overall quality of the sound in a musical piece
Types – monophonic, homophonic, polyphonic
8. Harmony – the combination of simultaneous musical notes in a chord

Kinds of Music in Lowlands of Luzon

1. Vocal Music - is a type of music performed by one or more singers, either with
instrumental accompaniment, or without instrumental accompaniment (a
cappella), in which singing provides the main focus of the piece.
