Week 1
BACKGROUND
UNDERSTANDING ANDINFORMATION FOR
APPRECIATION OFLEARNERS
THE DIFFERENT ASIAN DANCES

It is critical to comprehend and learn about another culture in order to extend

our horizons and connect with people from different cultures.
The SPA grade 8 curriculum calls for students to study not only Filipino folk
dances, but also dances from other Asian countries.
The nature and peculiarities of dances from various Asian countries, as well as
their music, attire, and basic steps and moves, will be covered in this quarter's
sessions.

LEARNING COMPETENCY

1. Describes the nature and characteristics of Asian dances - SPA_D-DAC-IIIa-j-1

ACTIVITIES

Activity 1 – Read Me….

Asia is the world's largest and most populous continent, with most of its inhabitants living in the
Eastern and Northern Hemispheres. Central Asia, East Asia, South Asia, South East Asia, and Western
Asia are the five major regions that make up the country's landmass. Asian countries' unique cultures,
religions, and traditions are represented not only in their way of life, but also in their dances. Within each
Asian country, there are various indigenous and ethnic tribes. These communities have distinct
personalities and customs, which are reflected in their dances.

The tightly codified and preserved motions and costumes are some of the common elements of
Asian dances. The gestures, rhythms, footwork, and costumes all portray a story through their
movements.

Common traits that you will see in the Asian Dances.

Central Asia
Dance forms exist for every occasion, from rites of passage to
funeral dances, folktale pantomimes, daily activities, regional
settings, local animals, staple food crops, seasonal celebrations,
and expressing the complete spectrum of emotions through
poetry, particularly in Central Asia.
From highly developed virtuosic classical styles to nuanced and
subtle folk-dance forms, dance is an integral part of life in Central
Asia. It can be seen both in rural settings and on the proscenium
stage.

East Asia
Dance and theater have played an important part in China, Korea,
and Japan since ancient times. Many plays and dances were
heavily influenced by religious ideas and rituals.
Describes elaborately clothed male and female shamans who sang
and danced to musical accompaniment, calling heavenly spirits
down to earth through their performance in China. Make-up and
costume impersonation of other personas.
In Korea, many masked dances serve a religious purpose.
In Japan and Korea, performances invoking Buddha's protection
are particularly popular and abundant.
The offspring of magico-religious acts can be seen in a variety of

intended to pray for longevity, a plentiful harvest, or to ward off
disease and evil.
Dance can be dramatic or non-dramatic, and it can be found in all

traditional theatre styles.
Both dance and theatre use puppets, masks, highly stylized

South Asia
South Asian theatre and dance are mostly influenced by Indian
culture. All traditional dancers and actors in India have relied on
the ideas of aesthetics and gesture language found in the Natya-
shastra. Even folk artists adhere to some of its rules.
All Hindu rites include dance. Farmers dance for a bumper crop,
hunters for a big bag, and fishermen for a big catch. Community
dance is used to commemorate seasonal festivals, religious fairs,
marriages, and births. Before going into battle, a warrior dances
before the picture of his goddess and seeks her blessings. To
please her god, a temple girl dances. The gods perform dances of
joy, rage, and triumph.

South East Asia

Southeast Asia's culture and customs are greatly impacted by
Buddhism, the most widely practiced religion, as well as Chinese
and Indian ancestry. The folks are often light-hearted, laid-back,
and fun-loving.
Most parts of Southeast Asian society center around religion,
hence religion and places of worship are treated with the utmost
reverence.
Flamboyant clothing, excessive jewelry, and clothing that exposes
the shoulders and knees are prohibited. It's a good idea to have a
shawl or scarf on hand. Taking off one's shoes before entering has
already become ingrained in Southeast Asian culture as a symbol
of respect and decency. In Southeast Asian culture, bowing is a

Western Asia
Western dance appears to have always incorporated a vast range
of communal or ritual dances, social dances enjoyed by people
from all walks of life, and skilled theatrical dances that followed
distinct but frequently overlapping paths of development,
according to the earliest accounts.
