No one likes getting less than their fair share, as anyone who has had to
share out a pizza or a cake at a kid’s party will know. It’s easy enough if there 11
four or eight mouths to feed—you just cut straight 12 the middle twice and
divide the quarters in half if necessary. 13 what if there are three or six? It’s
hard to judge those by eye. Geometry 14 the problem: make one cut from the
centre to the edge then, 15 the knife, measure the length of this cut to give you
the radius of the pizza. Starting 16 this first cut, go round the pizza’s edge by
the same distance and make 17 second cut, then repeat until you end up
with six equal parts, or three if you miss 18 a cut each time.

SERI MENANTI
Seri Menanti is the Royal Town of Negeri Sembilan, which lies 30 km east of
Seremban. Folklore has it that Raja Melewar, the first ruler of Negeri Sembilan, came
from Sumatra. On his arrival at the new land, he was so enchanted with the rolling
green hills that he named it Seri Menanti, which means ‘an abode of serenity’. Thus,
began the life of a royal town which even today, continues to delight visitors.
At the foothills of the jungle-clad terrain, enveloped by the cool mountain air,
lies an ancient wooden palace - the Seri Menanti palace. Rebuilt in 1908, after the
original one burnt down, the Minangkabau-inspired Palace has now been converted into
a Royal Museum. A striking feature of the building is its 99 pillars that represent the 99
warriors of the past. Another, is its three-storey central tower. The first floor of the
tower was occupied by the Royal Family, and the second by the Ruler. The top was the
royal treasure house and the repository of royal archives.

Questions 38 – 40 are based on the extract from the short story How Dalat Got Its
Name
“Our late chief has gone back to our ancestors,” he said, “leaving behind him
three sons. We have mourned for him for one hundred days. Now is the time to appoint
a new chief. The oldest son, Galau, shall be chief over us. I pray that he will rule us
wisely.”
“Galau is a good fellow,” Umat called out. “But he’s a bit soft-boned. What use
would he be as a chief?”
“A chief doesn’t have to be a strong man!” one of the elders answered. “Your
late father was very old, but he was the best chief we have ever had.”
“Ah, we were just lucky that there was no war! I respect my late father very
much, but he would have been useless in a fight.”
Everybody stared at the young man. How could he say such a thing about his
own father?
But some of the other men agreed. “Yes, what use is a weak, soft-boned chief if
there is a war?” they shouted. “Galau knows the laws and the customs, but does he
know how to fight? We want Umat for our chief!”
38 “Our late chief has gone back to our ancestors,” means the old chief
A had died.
B was late.
C had returned home.
D had gone to visit his forefathers.
40 Why did Umat feel that Galau was not suitable to be the next chief?
A He was a troublemaker.
B He was courageous.
C He was timid.
