Taste of the Past:

the Holidays
BY: JACINTHE PEÑALOSA

As I entered the comfort of my home after attending the simbang gabi with glee, it was
a sight to behold. Everything is surrounded by white lights, illuminating like the stars at
night. Every ornament, like my red nose during allergies, is on display to match the home
with the festivity. As I wandered around, my loved ones were bustling and on cloud nine as
they awaited midnight. My father and titos hurled into the living room and sang the jubilant
Christmas carols and songs at blast to fill the atmosphere with the spirit of the holidays. My
mother and titas were as busy as a bee in the kitchen as they cooked the jewels for the table
like roast chicken, ham oozing with pineapple glaze, sweet spaghetti, the savory lumpia, and
never to be forgotten— the lechon. The room was filled with the aromatic smells from these
delicacies, making everyone eager to chew and as hungry as a bull.

As midnight came, the long wait was over. Everyone was over the moon as they sat
around the table. We were smiling, laughing, telling jokes, narrating stories, reminiscing the
nostalgia about Christmas past while devouring the jewels my mom and titas prepared.
Afterward, we exchanged gifts with our mañanita or mañanito and played games with cash
as an award that made me a lion. My eyes were fireflies as the evening was filled with
warmth and yuletide.

As days, months and years passed by, so did the time spent during the holidays. We
grew apart as a space grew to form a vast and yawning divide. I long for the festive season,
where we can come together and celebrate our family. A moment we gather and forget
about the world for a day or two where life seemingly slows down. Those little instances
most mattered for I never would have thought it would slip away like Santa’s sleigh flying
into the horizon, losing sight with each floating gallop.
