INFERRING THE SPEAKER’S FEELINGS AND INTENTIONS

Sometimes, the speakers will not directly tell you what they mean or how they feel. It is up
to you as the listener to listen “between the lines” and infer the speaker’s feelings and
intention. Inference requires the listener to go beyond what is heard from the speaker.
Listen for cues like the speaker’s tone, choice of words, as well as non-verbal cues may give
you a hint on the speaker’s feelings and intentions.

Listen to your teacher as he or she reads an excerpt. As you listen, fill out the table below.
