INDIRA GANDHI INDOOR STADIUM SPORTS COMPLEX

NEW DELHI
INDIRA GANDHI INDOOR STADIUM SPORTS COMPLEX DELHI

Introduction :
● The Indoor stadium , the core of Indraprastha indoor stadium sports complex , sits almost in
the centre of the 102 acres of land.
● The stadium is the first of its kind in Asia and Europe and in size , ranks the third largest in the
world .
● In the Ninth Asian Games , this stadium was the venue for Gymnastics , Badminton and
Volleyball. This stadium has been certified by all , as not only being an architectural feature.

Architect Sharat Das and Design Consortium

Chief project engineer V.P.Chetal

Structural consultant: Hadkar Prabhu and associates, Mumbai

Acoustical consultants: Dr. M. Pancholy

Year of completion: 1982

Location: I.T.O. Flyover.

Capacity: 25,000 ( which has been proposed to be reduced to 18,000 for the
2010 Commonwealth Games)
Area: 102 acres
Cost: Rs.25 crores plus Rs.1.5 crore for partition curtain

Velodrome:
● A velodrome is an arena for track cycling. Modern
velodromes feature steeply banked oval tracks,
consisting of two 180-degree circular bends
connected by two straights. The straits transition to
the circular turn through a moderate easement
curve.
● Velodromes may be indoors or outdoors.
● 40 MM in diameter connected to the pylons through 8 girders
forming the valley of roof

● Whole structure can be broadly divided into three parts :

● Central compression ring – which rises in the segmental areas
between the main reinforced concrete towers ,
● Peripheral portion between circumferential girders ,
● The Pylons and the tip of the ridge.

● Eight towers called pylons located peripherally on each apex joint of an

octagon guy cables are used to suspend the roof from the pylons .
CONSTRUCTION SYSTEM

● The steel frame is welded on the steel pegs which

are laid on a distance of 2 mts.
● two steel pipes of 20 mm diameter are welded.
● On top of this , the blow past chairs are screwed.

central compression ring of 40 m diameter

Roof Insulation :

● The roofing purlins were installed after the The octagonal lotus like roof structure, covering
decentering operation. an area larger than the cricket grounds
● Special anti-corrosive paint treatment
was provided for the junction area of
dissimilar metals as the roofing sheet is
made of Aluminium.
● Stretched piano wires were used to keep
the top of the purlin in required place.
● Since the span of the roof exceeds 140m.
● 12 temporary supports right under the PLAN
outer shell location and 4 under
apex of the roof at 41.5 m from ground lvl
compression ring were used at the time
of the erection.
lowest points about 23 mts

SECTION
Structural members' connections :

Fenestrations :
Beyond the last tier of seats , the circular openings are provided with Venetian blinds .This is the only
provision of lighting through openings . Each of these openings have a diameter of approximately
2’-0” .

Foldable Sound Resisting Partition :

A 155 mts long and 41 mts high sound insulating partition has been provided in the stadium which
would enable it to be divided into two halves , both visually and acoustically separate .

Methodology Proposed
Lifting Process
The job of lifting the saddle and replacement of bearings was awarded to M/s Varshitha Concrete
Technologies Pvt. Limited Hyderabad. It was very important to understand the behavior of the roof structure Before commencement of replacement of
when the saddles are lifted to replace the bearings. In absence of detailed records of construction sequence bearings trial lifting was carried out on PYLON-7
adapted during construction of the structure, it was necessary to analyze the behavior of structure when and the total load was observed to be
lifted. After detailed analysis method statement was prepared for the execution of the work. approximately 182 tons. Hence it was decided
that 4 jacks of 75 ton capacity each would be
sufficient to lift the saddle as against 6 nos
proposed. This would enable sufficient gap for
placement of safety shims after lifting the
The Execution saddle.
With the limited space available between the saddle and the
bottom bearing plate of only 90 m, special flat jacks of closed height
less than 85mm had to be procured to accommodate within the
available gap. The diameter of the jacks also had to be limited to
160mm so that at least 6 no of jacks can be fixed below the
octagonal saddle bearing plate.

The dimensions and details of Jacks and pump are as under.

1. Diameter : 160 mm After placing the 4 nos of jacks in position and
2. Closed Height : 85 mm connecting all the 4 jacks to a single pump
3. Stroke height : 15 mm through a manifold, the nut of saddle holding
down bolts were loosened up to a maximum of
4. Piston Diameter : 90 mm
12mm. Now all the 4 Jacks are operated and the
5. Capacity : 75 Ton saddle lifted gradually.
6. Ram Area : 103.63 cm2 In the first step the saddle is lifted by about 5~6mm
7. Pump : Double speed hand pump 700 bar working pressure by which time the compression in the bearing is
released. In the second phase the saddle is lifted
by another 5~6 mm to release the existing bearing.
Once this process is completed immediately shim
plated are provided as packing between the top
and bottom bearing plates.
Preparatory Works
It was important to lubricate all joints including hinge joints for smooth lifting process so that no secondary
stresses are developed in the structure due to friction. Consequently all joints including hinge joints (of
tension member and backstay) thoroughly using hydraulic oil. The nuts of the oling down bolts of saddle
are sprayed with RUSTOLENE S-56 spray at least 24 hrs before loosening for easy loosening of the nuts.

The elastomeric bearing stopper plate on one side were carefully cut and removed before loosening the
nuts. To enable safe working suspended working platform was fabricated and erected towards the roof
side of the saddle.

Pre-measurements of the gap available between the bottom bearing plate and the saddle bearing plate
were recorded and noted.
