Summative Criterion D

Radioactivity - 2023
2022

Statement of inquiry: Understanding changes at the atomic level allows us to use

matter in a controlled and innovative manner while minimizing negative consequences.

ATL skills
1. Information literacy: finding, interpreting, judging and creating information.
Possible evidence in the product, but not limited to: sources are well
documented, ideas flow coherently between parts in the product
2. Critical thinking: analyzing and evaluating issues and ideas
Possible evidence in the product, but not limited to: discussion on the matter
from different point of views

Introduction:
Radioactive isotope has been used for many areas to ease humankind. Some isotopes
are widely used in medicine to cure diseases or when the patients need to undergo
specific medical procedure.

Nonetheless there are also many concerns about the effect of the radiation within the
human body, some patients who had treated using isotopes get swelling and vomiting.

Thus, you are task to answer this question,” Do you think Radioactive Isotope really
the best solution for medical treatment”
Some possible medical treatments :
1. PET (Positron Emission Photography)
2. Gamma Knife Surgery
3. Iodine – 131 pills
4. NCEPT (Neutron Capture Enhance Particle Therapy)
5. Radon as cancer therapy

Product
Make a reflection on the use of the radioactivity principle in the following option of
presentation :
1. Essay (1000-1500 words)
2. Scientific infographic
3. Presentation video (max. 7 minutes)

Time allocation:
3 periods

Rubrics
Task specific clarification:
Strand i:
• Choose 1 specific medical treatment mentioned above
• Explain radioactivity in general
• Give details with reasons of specific use of one radioisotope in one field of your choice.

Strand ii
• Give positive and negative/pros and cons/benefits and limitations of the radioisotope
compare to other methods
• Conclude which argument prevails
• Relate the conclusion to the environmental or economical or health factor
For example:
Positive impact : can be used for a smoke detectors
Negative impact : human maybe exposed through air / breathing
Elaborate the weight of the positive and negative impact and state your argument either
recommend the use or prohibit the use .

Strand iii
• Use relevant scientific language to the topic chosen such as half-life, radioisotope, alpha,
beta, decay etc.

Strand iv
• Correct application of in-text citations and bibliography
