AA Forms of Address
Among the inheritances from the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn that the
AA has retained is the use of certain forms of address appropriate to the
various Grades of the Order. These are as follows:
Probationer 0◦=0▫ to Practicus 3◦=8▫: All members of these Grades are simply
referred to as either ‘Frater’ (Latin ‘Brother’; pronounced “FRAH-ter”) or ‘Soror’
(Latin ‘Sister’; pronounced “SOR-or”). This is always an appropriate default
address, and is never, in actual point of fact, wrong. While you as a Probationer,
for example, may have an Instructor who is in actuality an Adeptus Minor 5◦=6▫,
whether or not you are aware of this, insofar as you are concerned they are a
Neophyte 1◦=10▫!
Philosophus 4◦=7▫ to Dōminus Liminis: Having come to the apex of the Outer
College, and the Grade of Dōminus Liminis being in part an extension of
Philosophus as well as a Portal Grade to the Second Order, these Grades are
referred to as either ‘Honored Frater’ or ‘Honored Soror’.
All of these conventions are mere formalities, and are truly most relevant only
when addressing a Brother or Sister in a formal capacity or in their capacity of
holding a particular Office within the Order, the three to whom this is most
relevant being as follows:
1
See “One Star in Sight”.
1
Imperātor: Functional, hands-on Head of the Order who puts into action the
teachings as overseen by the Præmonstrātor; thus he or she must “support the
authority of” the Præmonstrātor, “transmitting the Word of [the Præmonstrātor]
clearly, forcibly, and subtly…exert[ing his or her] whole power and authority to
govern the Members of lower Grades with balanced vigour and initiative in such a
way as to allow no dispute or complaint.” Symbolic or actual 6◦=5▫.
