CGC1D1: Canadian Geography

My Very Own Island

Wouldn’t it be great to one day own your own island. If you want this you’ll have to work hard in
life and achieve your goals for success. In the meantime we can pretend. Lets Imagine you’ve been
given the opportunity to create the island of your dreams.

Therefore the purpose of this activity is to design your own island based on skills and techniques
that we have examined in geography class. It is an exercise that will involve your mapping skills to
this point, as well as your creativity and work habits. Now let's get designing.

Please use standard symbols for your map (Use the Map symbols package attached to this
assignment)

Start off using PENCIL ONLY!! If you get ¾ done and then decide to change something, you won’t
be able to if you don’t use pencil.

There are 3 Parts to this Assignment:

🡪 Page 1: Cover Page

-Design a cover page that has the name of your island, your name, class, due date, and
teacher’s name

🡪 Page 2: Topographic Map

 A) The map should be made on 8 ½” by 11 or 14” blank paper.

 B) The map must be framed with a ruler that separates the map from the title and
legend

 C) The map must include a legend (that is well positioned, framed, neat printing, all
symbols present and is clear), title (all capital letters at the top of the map), north
arrow and scale (easy to read and use, line scale is fine – make sure your symbols are
drawn to scale, example of a scale is 1cm=10km)

D)The Island must use appropriate colouring and shading for all symbols. Ex. Blue
for water, green for vegetation, brown for contour lines, black for buildings, red for
roads, etc.)

 E) The island must have a minimum (meaning you can do more ☺ ) of :

-4 contour lines (with heights marked)
-1 lake or river (assign it a name)
-1 hill or mountain (indicate height and name)
-Two separate villages that are attached (by either single track railway –
which needs flat land, or two lane road)
-1 recreational facility (campsite, sports field, golf course, etc…)
-10 buildings
-one of which is a school
- one of which is a hospital
- the other 8 are your choice (… but do give your townsfolk a place to
live! ☺ )

 F) -Make accommodations for transportation routes by putting in roads, railway

lines, an airport, a docking port for boats or all four!!
-Be sure that your arrangement of transportation routes make sense; ie: avoid roads
that lead to nowhere or that go over mountains rather than around them. If you
have a docking port, then a transportation route should lead up to it, and so on…

🡪 Page 3: Written Paragraph

Explain the population, types of jobs, climate or other important information about life
on your island. Why could this island be a great (interesting) place to visit or live?

Every requirement has a “check box” beside it. As you work on your island, put an X in the box to
verify that you have met all the requirements and are ready to hand in your project.

IMPORTANT: When you are finished please take a picture of the three parts of the assignment
and submit them into the dropbox.
