Formulate the Linear Programming Model of the following problems:

1. The Philippine Packing Corporation produces two pineapple products, which it sells in
the market. Pineapple chunks and pineapple tidbits. The table below shows the
approximate man-hour requirement for each product.

PRODUCT PROCESS HARVEST PROCESSING PRESERVATION

Tidbits 80 120 60
Chunks 80 80 70

A total of 1,200 man-hour is available for harvesting, 1,000 for processing and 600 for
preservation. The company makes a profit of about P30.00/can and P20.00/can for the
chunks. How much should the company produce to maximize profit.

2. A local manufacturing industry in Iligan City produces three different metal products,
each of which must be machined, polished and assembled. The specific time requirement
for each product are as follows:

PRODUCT MACHINING POLISHING ASSEMBLING

I 3 3 3
II 8 4 6
III 10 5 1
The firm has available to it 480 hours of machine time, 350 hours of polishing time and
325 hours of assembling time. The unit profits of the products are P60.00, P50.00 and
P40.00 respectively. The firm promises to supply an outlet of 150 units of product I and
300 units of combination of products II and III. How many units of each product should
the firm produce each week to meet all obligations?

3. A small generator burns two types of fuel: LOW SULFUR and HIGH SULFUR, to
produce electricity. For one hour, each gallon of low sulfur emits 6 units of sulfur
dioxide, generates 5 kilowatts electricity and cost P60.00. Each gallon of high sulfur
emits 8 units of sulfur dioxide, generates 4 kilowatts and cost P50.00. The environmental
protection agency insists that the maximum amount of sulfur dioxide that can be emitted
per hour is 15 units. Suppose that at least 16 kilowatts must be generated per hour, how
many gallons of low sulfur and how many gallons of high sulfur must be utilized per
hour in order to minimize the cost of fuel?

4. A steel producer makes two types of steel: regular steel and special steel. A ton of
regular steel requires 2 hours in the open-hearth furnace and 5 hours in the soaking pit. A
ton of special steel requires 2 hours in the open-hearth furnace and 3 hours in the soaking
pit. The open-hearth furnace is available 8 hours per day and the soaking pit is available
15 hours per day. The profit on a ton of regular steel is P4,800 and it is P5,700.00 on a
ton of special steel. Determine how many tons of each type of steel should be made to
maximize the profit?
5. The Victoria Milling Company manufactures bags of concrete mix from beach sand and
river sand. Each cubic meter of beach sand costs P160.00 and contains 7 units of fine
sand, 4 units of coarse sand, and 6 units of gravel. Each cubic meter of river sand costs
P120.00 and contains 4 units of fine sand, 7 units of coarse sand, and 3 units gravel.
Each bag of concrete must contain at least 12 units of fine sand, 12 units of coarse sand,
10 units of gravel. Find the best combination of beach sand and river sand, which will
meet the minimum requirements of fine sand, coarse sand and gravel at the least cost.

6. A television producer designs a program that will include a comedy portion and
advertisement. The advertiser insists on at least 15 minutes of advertising time. The
producer insists on no more than 25 minutes of advertisement. The comedian insists on
at least 70 minutes of the comedy portion. The total time allotted for the comedy and the
advertisement cannot exceed 2 hours. If it has been determined that each minute of the
comedy program attracts 2 million viewers and each minute of advertisement attracts 1
million viewers, how many minutes should be given to each of the comedy and the
advertisement in order to maximize the number of viewers?

7. An animal feed producer mixes two types of grain: A and B. Each unit of grain A costs
P80.00 and contains 40 grams of fat, 20 grams of protein and 1,600 calories. Each unit of
grain B costs P96.00 and contains 60 grams of fat, 60 grams of protein and 1,200
calories. Suppose the producer wants each unit of the final product to yield at least 360
grams of fat, at least 240 grams of protein and at least 9,600 calories, how many units of
each type of grain should the producer use to minimize his cost?
