1.INTRODUCTION

The construction industry around the world is moving towards more advanced tools and
techniques to handle the ever-growing demands, tackle the increase in workload, and efficiently
manage resources. With that in mind, one of these sophisticated and essential tools is Primavera
P6. Primavera P6 is a software owned by Oracle and used by Project Management Professionals.
It is used for handling multiple projects and can store up to 100,000 activities with countless
resources and target plans.

Areas of application:

A project’s lifecycle consists of 5 steps: Initiation, Planning, Execution, Monitoring and Control,
and Closing. Each step is crucial for project success and to achieve the goal of the project scope.
However, a planning engineer mainly uses primavera P6 for the Planning, Monitoring, and
Controlling project schedule and resources.

Planning and Scheduling:

An ideal project plan or baseline is always constructed at the start of the project, for which
Primavera P6 can be used. This program helps in finding the actual relationship and sequence
between activities to be executed on-site. This is vital information for fast track projects to start
activities in parallel and avoid delays. Furthermore, the program allows the user to load resources
into the activities, which allows the user to get a clearer image of the resource allocation.

Monitoring:

Once the initial project plan is created in Primavera P6, it can then be set and maintained as a
project baseline and then progressed & monitored regularly. On-site progress is compared with
the baseline project. Additionally, a feature unique to this software is that multiple baselines can
be set and maintained on the program.

Controlling:

The user of Oracle Primavera P6 management tool can easily identify and analyze the
performance status of driving activities, milestones, longest path, 2nd longest path, other float
paths, earned value indices, and more with the use of advanced reporting features of Primavera
P6. Furthermore, the Team Member tool of Primavera P6 is a built-in tool that allows the site
team to easily report work progress daily with the use of a computer, a phone, or an iPad. In
conclusion, all the project team members can see and track live schedule activities on a daily
basis and provide feedback to the power user and project scheduler for improvement.

2.USES

2.1 Time Management:

Activities in a construction project can be planned based on the human and non-human resources
available. As a result, increasing or optimizing these resources can reduce delays and reduce
activity duration.

2.2 Resource Planning:

When you allocate resources to activities in Primavera P6, it shows a resource histogram, with
the help of which you can level resources and avoid uneven distribution of resources.

2.3 Cost Planning:

Every activity and resource has a cost associated with it. In conclusion, budget variations can be
easily identified throughout the project with the help of Primavera P6.

2.4 Work breakdown structure (WBS):

A WBS is a hierarchical structure of work that is necessary to execute a project. Each project's
work breakdown structure is hierarchical. Each WBS element may incorporate more specific
WBS levels and activities.

2.5 Critical Path:

The software can identify critical activities and automatically form a critical path of the project.
As a result, controlling the project can become quite easy by identifying the critical path. In
addition, Primavera P6 can generate multiple float paths to project end, allowing the project
management to Longest Path, 2nd Longest Path, and 3rd Longest Path, and other driving factors
of project milestones.

2.6 Activities’ Relationships:

The activities must be connected to one another in order to build a network. By assigning
preceding and following activities that have a strong connection to the activities, this is achieved.

• Finish to start (FS) relationship.

• Finish to finish (FF) relationship.

• Start to start (SS) relationship

2.7 Team Member (Coordination):

Team Member is a built-in tool on top of Primavera P6. It allows all project team members to be
able to track live-schedule and provide progress information and feedback on a daily basis to
improve the schedule.

3.PROS & CONS

➢ Advantages of Primavera P6

• True multi-user system with detailed permissions structures.

• Real time reporting is available – therefore all users can receive up-to-the-minute data
and pass it on to mangers as events happen.
• The Dashboard and interface can be personalized for the individual user.
• It helps users recognize issues, potential hazards so that they can make informed
decisions on their projects in order to have a successful outcome.
• Different areas of a project/program can be pulled out and reviewed without scrolling
through the whole project/program data.
• Oracle and other third parties offer a suite of software products which are compatible
with Primavera P6. These can integrate other areas of a project, such as Document
Management, BIM, Estimating, Contract Management, Accounting, etc.
• Primavera P6 can be used on multiple devices such as tablets and mobiles, allowing users
to access their project information anytime, anywhere.
• It operates on windows as desktop software or via a web browser which can be used in a
mixed user environment.

➢ Disadvantages of Primavera P6

• The main disadvantage is not using it to its full potential. The end user, (schedulers,
programmers, project managers) will be faced with a new installation and may only use it
to their level of understanding. This is a powerful tool and employees should be trained,
either from an online or scheduled class, in order to maximize its full potential.

 • Primavera P6 supports better quality schedules and a more consistent approach to project
management. This can be a learning curve for inexperienced schedulers.

4. FIND COMMAND
Primavera offers a quick solution for finding activities,and resources easily using the Find
command.It can be done by

1. Clicking Edit option in Toolbar

2. Clicking Find Button
3. Type the desired target
4. Click Find Next Button

5. REPLACE COMMAND
Primavera offers a quick solution for Finding and Replacing any activity easily using the Replace
command. It can be done by:

1. Clicking Edit option in Toolbar

2. Clicking Replace Button
3. Type the original activity name
4. Type the new activity name
5. Click Replace Button

Shortcut: CTRL + R

Replace resources assigned to activities

1. Choose Project, Activities.
2. Select the activity for which you want to replace a resource.
3. Display Activity Details, then click the Resources tab.

If resource security is enabled you can only view resources you have access to.
4. Select the resource you want to replace.
5. Click Add Resource.

6. Click the Replace button in the Assign Resources dialog box.
7. Select the new resource with which you want to replace the existing resource,
then click the Assign button.
8. Click the Close button.

6. FIND & REPLACE SUMMARY

Step Action
1. On the EPS page, click in the column that you want to search.
2. On the Edit menu, click Replace.

3. Type search and replace entries in the Find what and Replace with fields, and then
click Find Next.

4. To make a single replacement, click Replace.

5. The project name is changed.

6. The search function jumps to the next instance of the search term.

To make all remaining replacements, click Replace All.

7. Click OK.

8. Click Cancel to close the Find and Replace dialog box.

9. Click Save.

7. CONCLUSION:
Oracle Primavera P6 is one of the most popular project planning and scheduling software used
for effective project management. Although there are many planning and scheduling software
tools available on the market, Primavera P6 shines in being capable of planning and managing
large-scale, highly sophisticated, and multifaceted projects. Project managers, project
coordinators, project planners, schedulers, planning engineers, and stakeholders from various
industries have been using Primavera P6 software for many years. Learning Primavera P6
provides many advantages to the professionals looking to build up a career as a project manager.
