The appropriate attitude towards suffering in one’s life is very
well taught by Srila Prabhupada here inchapter 10 of Nectar Of
Devotion. Baladev Vidyabhushan in his commentary to this verse from SrimadBhagavatam which Srila Prabhupada refers heresaysBhakti is not attained by austerities, Bhakti isattained only by certain form of shradha or faith and this faith this shradha ,this inner orientation isWhat Srila Prabhupada has talked about. Devotee must have faith on Lord and His Plans and at anymoment of his life either good or bad, he may go through great tribulationsshould see that as Lord’mercy or His grace only. Tolerating all the situations the difficult ones, the miseries, the pain.Understanding these are the results of mine or karma’s or past deeds. And if without getting disturb bythem if he remains engaged in devotional services without any interruptions then that devotee becomeseligible for Lords special grace, it becomes his right full claim to be liberated or to get into the kingdomof God,the word used here is ‘Daya Bhak’,which refers to a Son’s becoming a lawful inheritor of the property of the father. As we go through life things will happen. As we say in English, life will happen to us. Life meanssometimes good things come our way, sometimes bad things come our way. A devotee needs tounderstand that these are results which come now because he has created them in the past. These are theresults of our own karma. This is the first understanding Prabhupada talks about. And one should be tolerant, not to get upset by the bad experiences happens in life, sometimes even withdevotees.Sridhar swami says you will attain Bhakti, if you stay on the path of Bhakti. It islike a son’sbecoming a lawful inheritor of the property of the father in due course of time but for that he has tostay alive to get the property .So the same with devotee, he has to stay alive in bhakti in order to get thelotus feet of Krishna to get liberation.Jiva Goswami says is it so simple. To stay alive you just have to breath, eat prasadam, go throughbathroom is this? No it means you should not be harsh towards others. Bad character is forbidden. Onlyone who doesn’t quarrel with his brothers gets the property. Means don’t blame others or quarrel withothers for your ongoing sufferings. Its natural human nature in material world that when one goes throughsome sufferings or difficulties in life instead of excepting them as a result of one’s own past deeds, startedto blame others and when no one suitable on found to blame on , the blame putted on Lordfor one’ssuffering. And one starts questioning, why me? Why the bad things happening to me?Those who are criticizing or blaming they are like living corpses, they are already dead although bodymay alive walking on the path of bhakti.Material existence means suffering and enjoy. Body is a karma puppet. But as said initially:Bhakti isattained only by certain form of shradha or faithFaith that what happens to us is directed by Krsna whotakes care of his devotees and uses these karmic strings to let us go through our life.
