STCW Table navigational watch on ships of 500 gross tonnage or more

Navigation at the operational level

Function
C1. Plan and conduct passage and determine position
Competence
Ability to determine errors of the magnetic and gyro-compasses, using terrestrial
KUPs means, and to allow for such errors

“Un-correcting” the compass

Activity Title
 Explain the principles of terrestrial magnetism and gyroscopic principles in
relation to direction finding
Course outcome
 Determine the true course/bearing and the magnetic and gyro errors by
terrestrial observation
 Compute the magnetic compass deviation given values of coefficient
 Obtain magnetic variation in the nautical chart
Learning outcomes
 Determine the true course and bearing based on the given values by
algebraic and/or graphical method

Chart Room
Activity Area
Nautical chart, parallel ruler, pair of navigational triangles, pencil, eraser
Materials Needed
Equipment Ratio 1:2
This is a problem-based learning on determining the compass course and bearing
Description based on given values.

Briefing Items to be discussed during briefing:

 Objective of the activity (Relate prior discussion)
 Description of the activity and any general instructions
 Evaluation of performance

Instructor’s Action INSTRUCTOR’S COPY ONLY (In the event that the class size exceeds 20
students, a secondary instructor is required.)
1. Brief the class for the activity.
2. Demonstrate “un-correcting” the compass:
a. Solving for deviation given values of coefficient;
b. Determining magnetic variation from the nautical chart; and
c. Solving for magnetic compass course/bearing.
3. Facilitate the students in practicing solving for un-correcting the compass.
4. De-brief the class.

Student’s Action 1. Solve for magnetic compass deviation given values of coefficient.
2. Determine the magnetic variation from the nautical chart.
3. Solve for the magnetic compass course/bearing.
