GLOBAL EDUCATION
UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) defines
Global Education as a goal to become aware of educational conditions or lack of it, in developing
countries worldwide and aim to educate all peoples to a certain world standards. And Global
Education is curriculum that is international in scope which prepares today’s youth around the
world to function in one world environment under teachers who are intellectually,
professionally
And humanistically prepared.

Intellectually
 In a way that relates to your ability to think and understand things, especially complicated ideas.
 Internalizing the content of a unit. When you internalize your content, you take the time to
deeply understand what it is you will be teaching and make decisions about how your students
will interact with the material.
Professionally
 A combination of courses or work experience designed to prepare and qualify individuals to be
effective within the teaching profession.
Humanistically
 From the point of view of classical studies, or from the humanist point of view.
In addition, Global education is education that opens people’s eyes and minds
to the realities of the globalized world and awakens them to bring about a world of
greater justice, equity and Human Rights for all.
Global Education is not a subject, but a dimension that runs through the
curriculum, an extra filter to help children make sense of all the information and
opinion the world is throwing at them.

The United Nations entered into an agreement to pursue six goals to achieve some standard of
education in placed by 2015 worldwide. To achieve global education, the UN sets the following
goals:
1. Expand early childhood care education. The goal calls for better and more possibilities to
support young children, and their families and communities, in all the areas where
the child is growing – physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually. It also lays special
emphasis on children who suffer disadvantage or who are particularly vulnerable, for example
those living in poverty, AIDS orphans, rural and minority children and in some situations girls as
a whole.
2. Provide free and compulsory primary education for all. This goal sets the objective of
seeing that all children - girls as well as boys - go to school and finish primary education. This
should happen by 2015 at the latest. Primary schooling must be entirely free of charge and be
compulsory for every child. Some groups of children need special attention, for instance
those who belong to minority groups and those whose circumstances are particularly
difficult.
3. Promote learning and life skills for young and adult. This goal places the emphasis on the
learning needs of young people and adults in the context of lifelong learning. It calls for
equitable access to learning programs that are appropriate, and mentions life skills particularly.
We should note too that EFA Goal 6 also refers to essential life skills as a desirable outcome of
quality basic education.
4. Increase adult literacy by 50%. This goal calls for a certain level of improvement in adult
literacy by 2015 – it says that it should be 50 per cent better than it was in 2000. The needs of
women should receive particular attention. In addition, all adults should have opportunities to
go on learning throughout their lives.
5. Achieve gender parity by 2015, gender quality by 2015. This goal calls for an equal number of
girls and boys to be enrolled in primary and secondary school by 2005 – this is what gender
parity means (even though not all girls and boys may be enrolled at this stage). It further aims to
achieve gender equality in education by 2015. This is a more ambitious goal, meaning that all
girls and boys have equal opportunity to enjoy basic education of high quality, achieve at equal
levels and enjoy equal benefits from education.
6. Improve quality of education. This goal calls for improvement in the quality of education in
all its aspects, aiming for a situation where people can achieve excellence. Everyone should be
able to achieve learning outcomes that are recognized and can be measured, particularly with
regard to literacy, numeracy and other skills essential for life.
James Becker (1982) defined global education as an effort to help individual learners to see the
world as a single and global system and to see themselves as a participant in that system. It is a
school curriculum that has a worldwide standard of teaching and learning. This curriculum
prepares learners in an international market place with a world view of international
understanding.

Global education is all about diversity, understanding the differences and teaching the
different cultural group in order to achieve the goals of global education as presented by the
United Nations. It is educating all people in the world from the remote and rugged rural
villages in developing countries, to the slum areas of urbanized countries, to the highly
influential and economically stable societies of the world. Global education addresses the
need of the smallest schools, to the largest classrooms in the world. It responds to borderless
education that defies distance and geographical location.

is situated.
More specifically a global Filipino teacher should have the following qualities and characteristics

The need for global teacher is on the rise in several countries worldwide. Even develop
countries are in dire need of competent teachers who will man the countries’ rural and urban
classrooms. This is true with our neighboring countries like Singapore, Cambodia and Thailand.

Global education requires future teachers the skills for the 21st century so that
all will be ready to play a significant role to provide educational access to all types of
learners all over the world. This teacher is a global teacher and there are millions of
global teachers needed now and in the future.

To become a global teacher, we have to broaden our teaching perspectives and

we shouldn’t be afraid of dealing with other people and expanding our experiences
beyond the confines of our classroom, school or community. The wider the learning
environment, the higher the chance of achieving global competitiveness.
