Introduction

Lesson 3: Instrumental music from Lowland of Luzon

Musical instruments are devices used to produce musical sound. Instruments also

express individual and community identities and reflect physical geographies. (Post,

2013). Musical instruments have been used for various purposes. In earlier times, they

are used to accompany traditional dance, songs, and to summon the gods for good

fortune. But in later civilization, instrumental music was used for fun and entertainment.

In the lowlands of Luzon, musical instruments showed the resourcefulness of

Filipinos, they were able to create indigenous instruments based on the materials

available from their surroundings. They used it during fiestas to honor patron saints,

accompany folksongs, popular songs, dance music and patriotic songs. Like the vocal

music from lowland of Luzon, these instruments have Spanish and other European

influences.

Isn’t it interesting? Now let us proceed. I hope you

will have fun in doing the different succeeding activities.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC FROM LOWLAND OF LUZON

1. Rondalla – is a group of stringed instruments played with the pick. It was originated

in Medieval Spain and became most popular in the Philippines during 19 th century.

The Filipino Rondalla has become defined as an ensemble of only plucked

string instruments: bandurya (bandurria, banduria), oktabina (octavina), la -

ud (laud), gitara (guitarra, guitar), and bajo de uñas which is now commonly

supplanted by the upright bass (Morales, 2004).

8
2. Brass band – is a musical ensemble that consists of percussion, brass and

woodwind instrument. For Filipinos, the month of May is the time for fiesta. During

this summer month, most fiestas are celebrated in various provinces of the

Philippines to honor different patron saints. A town fiesta is never complete without

band music, a significant ingredient for lively and vibrant celebration (Filipinas

Heritage Library, 2008).

 Percussion are instruments sounded by being struck, although other

playing methods include rubbing, shaking, plucking, and scraping.

 Brass are wind instruments usually made up of brass or metal produces

sound through blowing.

 Woodwind are wind instruments made up of wood and produces sound

through blowing

3. Las Piñas Bamboo Organ – A Philippine National Treasure that can be found in

St. Joseph’s Church Las Piñas City. It was founded by the Augustinian Recollect

priest-musician Father Diego Cera in 1816. The bamboo organ is made of 902

bamboos and 129 metal pipes that generate a clean and flute-like sound, distinct

from other organs. It is a one of a kind creation that is presumed to be the oldest

and most complete in the country, and possibly in the world (Ethnic Groups

Philippines, 2016)

10
4. Musikong Bumbong – is a Filipino marching band that uses improvised

woodwind instruments that are made of bamboo. The shape and the sizes are

similar to brass band instruments but have different sound. This is the first bamboo

band in the Philippines formed in 1896. The band was composed of freedom

fighters who performed patriotic pieces during meetings of the "Katipunan"

revolutionary organization (Qu, 2008).

orchestra that uses non-tradtional bamboo instruments. It was managed by Victor

O. Toledo, conductor and musical Director. It is a complete bamboo ensemble,

handcrafted from 6 to 30 known species of the native Filipino bamboo instruments

of various, designs, shapes and sizes (Guia, 2012).

11
6. Angklung Esemble – a small group of musicians who plays angklung bamboo

instruments, that is made of bamboo rattle tubes attached to a bamboo frame.

It is played by rapidly shaking the bottom part of the frame from side to side while the

other hand steadily holds the upper part of the instrument and this causes a rapidly

repeating note to sound.
