The key takeaways are that a summary is a brief statement that gives the most important points of something. It helps in retelling a story or essay in a few statements and can be very helpful for studying.

The purpose of summarizing is to condense a longer text into a shorter version that retains the most important ideas and details. It allows the reader to understand the overall meaning and main points of the text.

The steps in summarizing a text are to identify the topic sentence or main idea, determine the supporting details, and write a concluding statement that restates the main idea.

Modular Learning as one of the Alternative Delivery Modes offers a solution for a
continuous learning amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Along with online classes be it
synchronous or asynchronous, such learning modules be printed or non-printed materials
guide both teachers and learners through the content and various activities.

As teachers distribute these modules to parents or guardians, learners are given

ample time to come up with the expected competencies. Not from the usual face-to-
face where everyone is used to, modules or Self- Learning Kits are comprehensible, yet
guidance both from the teachers and parents/ guardians are needed.

The time has come to prove how people, young and old, could adjust and cope with
challenges along the way. Gaining insights from the so-called New Normal, adaptation
along the way becomes part of everyday routine.

Working hand in hand, self-learning through modules is made possible.

Bayanihan of the People

by Mary Rose DJ. Mallari

Bayanihan is known as one of our traditions which portrays the values of

unity, camaraderie, harmony, cooperation and teamwork in a community. In
our modern times, this is still practiced. Tested by COVID-19, this Bayanihan
serves as one of the solutions, when a member of a family can’t go out
because of restrictions, pasabuy (originally pasabay) made it possible of
having your needs from the grocery store or market. Simply have the list of
items and the amount it will require.

That willingness to offer help within or outside the community proves

how we value this tradition.

It’s notable to mention the kind of heroism and the helping ability of our
frontliners: doctors, nurses, health workers, government officials, employees
and the ordinary people.

The conduct of relief operations coming from public and private

sectors, rich or poor people also become visible. Prayer to our Almighty God
also proves to be one of our major weapons to surpass fear and depression.

Inculcated by our elders, Bayanihan is by heart still one of the traditions,

an enduring value we, Filipinos do possess..

What is It

Summarizing Key Information from a Text

How do you summarize a text? Do you find it difficult? What do you do?
Let’s have our simple discussion!

A summary is a brief statement that gives the most

important points of something. It helps you retell a story or an
essay in a few statements. Hence, it should be brief and easy to
read. When you write a summary, focus on the major events and
do not concentrate on the details. The aim of summarizing
is to give the essential ideas of a written piece.

It is reducing a text to its main idea and necessary

information.

emember, a summary is not a paraphrase where you

R
are restating someone else’s ideas in your own words for easier
understanding.

summary is written in your own words. It contains only the

A
ideas of the original text.

When you write a summary, remember to be as objective as possible and do

not include your opinion on the ideas of the original text.

Study the following examples:

Original Text Summary

termites, but they are quite different and
can be easily distinguished. In contrast
to termites, ants are

and have constriction

abdomen. Termites are light in color and
shed their wings. Flying ants do not shed
their wings. Also, ants and termites belong
to different orders.

on all the rides again. They spent all day
having fun. Around 5:00 PM, mom came

excited and told her all about it during the
ride home.

To summarize a text:

• Look for the key information, use title and headings if provided (they give clues to the
main idea).
• Look at each paragraph, locate the topic sentence (often the first sentence) and decide what
the main point is.
• Use concluding sentences (the last part is usually the concluding part).
• Only include the main idea of the text. Look for repeated ideas and proper nouns.

• A summary is not a paraphrase. You were taught that a paraphrase is restating

someone else’s ideas in your own words for easier understanding.
• A topic sentence is a sentence that expresses the main idea of the paragraph
in which it occurs.
• The supporting details in the paragraph (the sentences other than the topic
sentence) will develop or explain the topic sentence.

To summarize a plot:

A plot summary is a shortened version of a story’s original text written in your own
words. It helps you recall and retell the story in your own words. It also helps you analyze
the story’s elements because you need to consider the setting, the characters, and the
events from beginning to end.

In your previous grades, you have learned about the elements of a short story where plot
is one of them. Plot is about the arrangement or sequence of events in a story.

10
Here are the guidelines to write a plot summary:

1. Read the story and get a bigger picture. Do not focus too much on details yet.
2. Read the story the second time. List down events as they happen in the story. Make use of
the timeline as guide in writing the plot summary.
3. Start writing the draft of the plot summary in paragraph form.
4. Declarative sentences are helpful in this task.
5. Read your summary draft. Check for consistencies.
6.Revise the draft if needed.

Pride of the Tribe

by Linda B. Bolido

Ivyrose Bayawan Paz admits she did not know much about her mother Emiliana’s
indigenous community.

Manobos are described by some anthropologists as proto-Philippine or proto-

Austronesian people found mostly in areas that straddle the boundaries of Agusan, Bukidnon,
Cotabato, Davao and Misamis Oriental.

Paz, who was born in the town of Makilala, Cotabato, and grew up in Kidapawan City, the
province’s capital says, “I did not know the language. I was not very familiar with my mother’s
culture. I was immersed in the Manobo tradition, ceremonies, and rituals.”

She only met her maternal relatives when they came to visit or on special occasions.
While Paz knew little about her Manobo roots, she knew very well what she was going to be.
Her mother is a retired stenographer while her late father Teresito, an Ilonggo- Tagalog, was
a court interpreter.
Paz, the only girl of four children, decided early on she was going into law.She took up
Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, as somebody advised her it was the best preparation for law
school, graduating cum laude in 2010 from the University of Southern Mindanao in Kabacan,
Cotabato. But a law education and the bar exam review classes were expensive.

Paz thought she would work first and save money for her schooling. She worked as a call
center agent in Manila but found she could not save money. “Magastos (It was expensive),”she
says, especially since she had to pay rent to be near her workplace.

Her eldest brother, who works as a computer programmer in Dubai, asked her to wait
until he was able to save enough to pay for her law studies.

Then Paz heard of the scholarship program of the Mount Apo Foundation Inc. (MAFI).
Applicants only need to be 25 percent Manobo. Paz is 50 percent Manobo, a descendant of
datu on her mother’s side.

With her scholarship, which also covered bar review classes, Paz says “ I learned more
about the Manobo” and her interest in her ancestry was raised. At the Ateneo de Davao
University College of Law, she says, she studied closely the Indigenous Peoples’ Rights Act
of 1997, the issue of ancestral domain and civil laws pertaining to the Philippines’ indigenous
communities.

For Paz, now a full-fledged lawyer, achieving her dream has taken her back to her
Manobo roots, introducing her to the community’s traditions and rituals.
