- is defined as the ability to do work. If enables us to perform many activities. It is all around us.
Although we cannot see energy, we can see things it does. It is stored in the food we eat, in the batteries
or dry cells or in fuels.
1. POTENTIAL ENERGY
- Is energy at rest. It is called as such because the object that posseses it has the ability ( potential ) to
cause change and to make things work. An object hss potential energy because of its position and uts
compositions.
- The rock on the top of the hill has potential energy. This energy is due to its position. Although the rock
is not moving it has the potential to move or to roll down the hill because of its position. The amount of
potential energy an object has is affected by the mass of an object and its distance from the ground.
- if rocks of the same mass are elevated in the different positions or heights, the rock on the higher
position has greater tendency to move. Therefore, rock B has greater potential energy.
2. KINETIC ENERGY
- kinetic energy is the energy an object has when it is in motion. All moving object have kinetic energy. A
girl dancing, a farmer plowing in the field and moving car have kinetic energy.
- Not all moving objects have the same amount if kinetic energy. The amount of kinetic energy a moving
object has depends upon its mass and speed of movement. If two objects have the same mass, the
object moving faster has the greater kinetic energy.

HEAT ir thermal energy is the energy from the movements of the tiny particles in matter. LIGHT is the
only energy that we can readily see. It is also produced by the vibrations of very small particles in
matter.
📌SOUND
- Is produced in different ways. The simplest way is when objects hit each other. ( Clap your hands, drop
a book on the table, marbles and billiard balls produced clicks as they collide percussion instruments
also produced sound this way ) sounds produced this way come from the kinetic energy lost when
moving bodies collide.
- sounds is produced by making VIBRATIONS. when you speak, sing or hum your vocal chords vibrate.
Wind instrument make sounds when their strings vibrate. In speakers q part called the diaphragm
vibrates to produce sound.
- HOW ID SOUNDS TRANSMITTED AND HEARD? The force of impact between two bodies and the
vibrations of bodies cause the air molecules around them to vibrate. The vibrating air molecules pass on
the energy to adjacent air molecules.
- in each of our ears, we have a very sensitive membrane called the EARDRUM. The vibrating air causes
the eardrum to also vibrate. Thr small bines hammer, anvil and stirrup then carry then energy to the
brain through the auditor nerve.
📌HEAT
- All matter is made up of tiny particles which are in constant motion. Their constant movement
produces energy. The sum of the energies from the moving molecules in an object is its thermal energy.
- This thermal energy can be transferred to another object. The energy is transit is called HEAT whrn
heat is absorbed, it turns into thermal energy.
- ( When you dip a metal spoon in a cup if hot coffee, heat from the water is transferred to the spoon. As
the spoon absorbs the heat, is tiny particles vibrate faster and increase their energies )
- The energy from the movement of tiny particles will depend on how much heat was absorbed. A higher
average energy from the movement of the particles also means a higher temperature. Note that heat
flow is determined by temperature. Heat always moves from an object if the high temperature to an
object of lower temperature. Heat flow will stop once the two objects are the same temperature.
📌LIGHT
- Energy from the sun reaches the earth in the form if light or radiant energy that travels by
electromagnetic ( EM ) waves. The sun's energy travels as visible light, the only EM wave that can be
seen by naked eye. The sun also gives off other types of EM waves such as ultraviolet rays and infrared
rays
- Light energy cannot move objects in its own. But ut can be converter to another form of energy, koke
electrical energy to make objects move and functions. A solar radiometer, for example absorb lights
using a fanlike assembly in its glass bulb converts ut to kinetic energy.
- This also true for a solar powered cars. The solar panels convert light energy into electricity which is
then used to mske the motor run. Solar panels are also installed in some homes as an alternative energy
provider
