Gender identity and gender expression
Gender identity is someone’s personal and intimate
sense of their own gender. Gender expression is
how they choose to reflect their gender identity in
their physical appearance. These two concepts are
independent of each other and it’s not uncommon
for someone’s gender expression to not reflect their
gender identity or the appearance typically
associated with their gender identity.
Spend some time thinking about how gender
identity and gender expression applies to your
vision of Countess Strahd.
For example, would Strahd’s search for equality
drive her to live as a man, rejecting traditional
feminine behavior cues and values? Does she feel
more comfortable in manly attire than in a dress?
Does she prefer her hair tightly pulled back rather
than arranged in an elegant hairstyle?
Or, on the contrary, does the inequality she faces
cause her to dig in her heels and defensively cling
to her feminine gender identity, demanding
acceptance and treatment not only as an equal but
as a better?
Or perhaps Strahd fits into neither of these
categories, unwilling or unable to conform to
either gender’s traits or expectations. For someone

Plot Hooks of the Berez Coven
If you want to nudge your party toward visiting
the Coven at Berez you can use the following
hooks:
• A random encounter with a witch, at first non-
hostile, who can be a vendor of potions and
poisons. If attacked by the party, she tells them her
sisters will strike back in vengeance. If treated
politely, she discloses the location of the coven and
warns the party that it is not a place for men.
• Notes in van Richten’s tower or research
conducted by Ezmerelda indicate that the coven’s
hiding place is in the swamps.
• A conversation with Lady Wachter, who is aware
of the coven and their customs.
• If the coven is allied with Baba Lysaga, then any
captured druid or witch at the Winery or Yester
Hill says that their plot to attack the Martikovs was
assisted by magic from the witches of Berez.
• Paula (see The Trial of Sarela in the following
section) tells the party that there is a commune of
women living in the swamps of Berez. If the party
assists her and helps Sarela escape, the sisters will
ask characters to travel with them to Berez, for
protection. If the party accepts and safely delivers
the girls to the coven, the witches become friendly
to the party and will grant them a boon.

With the last of her enemies slaughtered, Strahd
climbed atop a hill and marveled at the beauty of the
land she had just conquered. She decided to name the
land Barovia, after her father, and determined this was
to be their new homeland.
From her conquered lands she called forth wizards
and artisans capable of raising a castle that would
surpass any rival fortress in beauty and fortitude. She
entrusted this endeavor to archmage Khazan, and was
so pleased with the results that, as a gift, she granted
him the land around Lake Baratok. There, the
archmage would construct his own abode in the shape
of a tower.
True to her word, Strahd had Argynvost’s corpse
hacked and his skull brought into the castle as a
testament to her unbeatable force and power.

Strahd began to repopulate the valley with conquered
subjects from other lands, and ruled Barovia in her
father’s stead. Peace and politics made her restless. War
had given her a sense of purpose and control. Her sense
of purpose now lay perilously ambiguous, and the
emptiness further sharpened her already mercurial and
cruel temper.
Behind Strahd’s back, noble families of the Valley
plotted against her, eager to reclaim the domain of the
lands she had captured and stop the influx of foreign

The Cursed
The horrid deeds that led to such a fate were so vile
that they drew the attention of the Dark Powers, who
whisked away the land and enshrouded it in Mists,
forever condemning it as a Demiplane of Dread and
cursing the souls of its inhabitants to remain trapped in
it for eternity. For no soul could ever escape the Mists;
if one should die, the soul would linger there, trapped
until it was reincarnated into a new body, only to relive
a miserable existence in an endless cycle.
Perhaps none feel this curse more deeply than the
knights of the Order of the Silver Dragon, who, led by
their commander Vladimir Hornsgaard, returned to
Barovia as crazed revenants thirsting for revenge.
The Vampire Countess quickly consolidated her
absolute power across the valley of Barovia. First, she
ensured that every Baron and noble who had stood
against her was publicly and ruthlessly executed. In
their stead, she elevated families who had pledged
themselves to her.
Strahd returned to the Fanes she had once visited
with Tatyana, desecrating the ancient shrines and
draining their fey magic from them. In doing so, Strahd
became “The Land,” able to command the weather, the
Mists, and the animals of her domain.
Once Strahd’s dominion had been established, Patrina
returned to Strahd, this time with another tempting
offer: a proposal of a dark marriage, a ceremony that
would convert Patrina into a full vampire, equal to
Strahd—an eternal companion. Still grieving for
Tatyana and aware of the solace Patrina’s company
afforded her, Strahd agreed.
However, before the ceremony, the remaining dusk
elves learned of this scheme. Led by Patrina’s own
brother Kasimir, the dusk elves lured Patrina into a
trap that left her paralyzed, then stoned her to death.
That very night, Strahd fell upon the dusk elves with
murderous vengeance, slaughtering every dusk elf
woman and child, leaving the men without mates and
condemned to witness the slow end to their race.

worried that the Dark Powers would take it as an

It was after that first bite that Ireena began to pull

inexplicably so, Strahd would lead to her doom.

A fantastic retrospective on lesbian and crossdressing
cinema in general and a thorough exploration of the
“lesbian vampire” character, cinema’s most persistent

Carmilla by Sheridan LeFanu (1872)
The seminal and original work on the female lesbian
vampire, Carmilla predates Bram Stoker’s Dracula by
more than twenty years. The novella follows the titular
character, a vampire who preys upon a teenaged
woman. As an original, the premise and plot of this
short novella is pretty straightforward, though it is
worth noting here for its historical resonance.
The novella has been adapted many times into film

it provides a revisionist view on this story and a
modern, contemporary take.
