These irregular past forms only appear in affirmative phrases:

I didn't eat chicken yesterday. (NOT I didn't ate chicken yesterday.)
Did you eat chicken yesterday? (NOT Did you ate chicken yesterday?)

PAST SIMPLE: NEGATIVE AND INTERROGATIVE

To make the negative form of the past simple, we use a very similar structure to the negative
form of the present simple. Instead of "do / does", we use the auxiliary "did":

Subject Auxiliary Not Infinitive

I / you / he / she / it / they / we did not work
In written and spoken English (except in very formal situations or for special emphasis), it's
common to combine "did" and "not" to make the short form "didn't":
I didn't work yesterday.
To make the interrogative form, we put the auxiliary verb before the subject:

Auxiliary Subject Infinitive

did I / you / he / she / it / they / we work?

Did you work yesterday?

To avoid repetition, we often use short answers. These are formed with the subject and the
auxiliary "did" or "didn't":
No, I didn't.

Affirmative Negative Interrogative Short answer

they / we worked they / we didn't work it / they / we work No, I / you / he / she /

PAST SIMPLE: REGULAR AFFIRMATIVE

To make the past form of regular verbs, we can add the ending "-ed":
Infinitive Past form
to work worked
to walk walked
The past form is the same for each person:
I worked yesterday.
She worked last week.
They worked this morning.
If the verb ends in "-y", we usually remove the “y” and add "-ied":

Infinitive Past form

to try tried
to study studied

PAST SIMPLE: 'TO BE'

We normally use the past simple to refer to finished actions in the past. Below are the past
simple forms of the verb "to be":

I / he / she / it was
Affirmative
you / we / they were
I / he / she / it was not
Negative
you / we / they were not
was I / he / she / it...?
Interrogative
were you / we / they...?

Yes, you / we / they were.

No, you / we / they were not.

Examples:
I was late for the meeting yesterday.
It was not very cold last night.
Were you born in the United States?
In spoken and informal written English, it's common to combine "was" and "were" with "not"
to make the short forms "wasn't and "weren't":
I wasn't at the party.
We weren't tired.
