Investigate Line Symmetry

Draw vertical lines of symmetry on these shapes.

What shapes do you make by doing this?

Example:

Drawing a line of symmetry on

this square makes 2 rectangles.

I can draw more than one

5-sided shape that has a
vertical line of symmetry.

Is Jack correct? Prove it by drawing examples.

Investigate Line Symmetry

These regular polygons have

a vertical line of symmetry.

Do you agree?

You could cut out the shapes so you can fold

them and investigate them with a mirror.

Do you think this is true for all

regular polygons? Explain why.

Adult Guidance with Question Prompts

Children investigate the symmetrical properties of 2D shapes. They

will investigate whether all regular polygons have a vertical line of
symmetry. To do this they can cut out the shapes so they can fold
and turn them. Children will need rulers, mirrors and scissors for this
activity. They do not need to be able to name all of these polygons.
Can you name any of these polygons?
How many sides/vertices do they each have?
Do any of them have a vertical line of symmetry?
How do you know?
How can you check you are correct?
If you turned the shapes, would they still have a vertical line
of symmetry?
Do you think all regular polygons will have at least one line
of symmetry?
Explain why you think that.
How can you find out?
