If we want to indicate the value of derivate in Leibniz notation of , use

Definition 8.1.2: The function is differentiable at if exists and differentiable on

an open interval if it is differentiable at every
number in the interval.

8.2 DERIVATIVE OF POWER FUNCTIONS

 Using the definition to find the derivative is not the easiest task.
 In this section, we develop certain rules for finding the derivatives of power functions and
combinations of power functions.

8.2.1 Rules of Differentiation

1. Constant function : y = c, c is a constant

d
 A horizontal line has a zero slope: y ' = (b) = 0
dx

Proof : Let

Example 8.2.1 : Find y’ of the following functions:

(a) y = 3 (b) y = -2

2. Power function: y = xn , n a real number:

d n
y'= ( x ) = n.x n- 1
dx

Example 8.2.2 : Find the derivative

(a) (b)

d 1
(c) (d)  
dt  t 

(e) (f)

3. If u(x) is a differentiable function of x and b is a constant, then

d du
(bu)  b.
dx dx
Proof : Let
Example 8.2.3 : Find

(a)
(b)
d d  4 
(c) (cu)n (d)  
du dw  w 

4. If f(x) and g(x) are two differentiable functions of x, then

d
 f ( x)  g ( x)   d  f ( x)   d g ( x) 
dx dx dx
Proof : Let h(x) = f(x) + g(x)
Then

dy
Example 8.2.4 : Find
dx
(a)

(b)

(c) y = 3 x5 + x- 3 (d) y  x 7  3 x 2

8.3 DERIVATIVE OF A PRODUCT

If f and g are both differentiable, then

d
 f ( x)  g ( x)   f ( x)  d g ( x)   g ( x)  d  f ( x) 
dx dx dx

This method is called the product rule. Do the proof as an exercise.

Example 8.3.1 : Find the derivative of the following functions.

(a) y = (x - 2)(x2 + x + 3)
f(x) = x - 2 g(x) = x2 + x + 3
f’(x) = 1 g’(x) = 2x + 1

dy
Solution: = (x – 2)( 2x+1)+( x2 + x + 3)(1)
dx

(b) h( p)  (5 p  3 p)(2 p  8 p  7)
2 3

(c) w(u)  (2 u  1)(u  3)

Example 8.3.2 : Find y’(0) if y = (x - 2)(x2 + x + 3).

Example 8.3.3 : (a) If , where and , find .

8.4 DERIVATIVE OF A QUOTIENT

If f and g are differentiable, then

dy d  f ( x) 
d
 f ( x)   f ( x)   g ( x) 
g ( x) 
d
    dx dx
2
dx dx  g ( x)  [ g ( x)]
This method is called the QUOTIENT RULE. Do the proof as an exercise.

Note: . Also, where possible, simplifying a quotient is sometimes easier than using the
Quotient Rule.

Example 8.4.1 : Find the derivative of the following functions.

 x-2 
(a) y  2 
 x + x + 3
f(x) = x - 2 g(x) = x2 + x + 3
f’(x) = 1 g’(x) = 2x + 1

dy d  x  2 

d

dx

 x  2  ( x  2)  d x 2  x  3
  
dx dx  x 2  x  3  [ x 2  x  3]2

( x 2  x  3)  (1)  ( x  2)  (2 x  1)

[ x 2  x  3]2
x 2  x  3  (2 x 2  3 x  2)

[ x 2  x  3]2
x 2  x  3  2 x 2  3x  2

[ x 2  x  3]2

(c)  
