WHY SMOKING IS BAD

Did you know that smoking is among the most preventable diseases in the United

States? Also according to cancer.org, tobacco causes several 440,000 deaths in a year. The

question that is mostly asked is how people have access to such information and yet smoking still

happens to be a problem. Smoking not only affects your health, but it also moves deeper to ruin

your appearance and destabilize you economically. Looking simply at the facts, you find that

buying cigarettes will cost you money, and when you want to quit smoking, it will cost you even

way more. By the end of this speech, I hope we will be together to the conclusion that smoking is

destroying the lives of many.

Confucius once said, “Study the past if you would like to define the future.” What better

way to know more about smoking than by looking briefly at its origin. Various substances are

smoked globally, the likes as tobacco, opium, and cannabis. However, before the arrival of

tobacco by the Europeans, cannabis and opium were mostly smoked. The interesting thing is that

these substances were not smoked directly, rather they would be burned as incense then inhaled

directly. By observing that history we can see how far smoking has come presently it has taken a

revolution and now we have electronic cigarettes. In an article by Jenssen et al (2019), these

electronic cigarettes have targeted the youth. This advancement could be advantageous to the

cigarette industry but for the youths, it is worrying.

For electronic cigarettes, there is still more research needed to prove their harmful

habits. Researchers like Gotts et al (2019), have argued that electronic cigarettes will come to

take over the whole market displacing tobacco cigarettes. Münzel et al (2020), have ranked

tobacco smoking as the number one cause of non-communicable disease, which according to the

events we have been witnessing could be true. Tobacco smoking causes a lot of problems to
people, with number one on the list being cancer. Since tobacco smoke contains about 4000

chemicals a smoker and also people who get affected by the smoke can get more than one cancer

type. Smoking goes on to ruin one’s appearance, having bad breath, yellow teeth and fingertips,

and wrinkling skin. Smokers also face inconveniences since a lot of places do not allow

smoking. The sad part is that it becomes even more difficult to quit smoking. Due to the

addictive agent called nicotine in tobacco, smokers find it hard to quit smoking no matter how

hard they want to. Apart from nicotine, other factors make it hard to eradicate smoking. In the

early 1960s, cigarette manufacturers found a strategy that boosted the sales of cigarettes around

the globe. This strategy is what we call today advertising. Cigarettes were being promoted to

have health benefits for people and they made people feel and look good. The industry later

started using doctors, celebrities, and beautiful women in their advertisements which motivated a

lot of people to start smoking.

As I mentioned earlier quitting smoking is the hard part. A lot of people have tried

quitting the habit but later fall back to smoking. Various people have even suggested that

individuals who quit smoking, live for a short time after quitting the habit. People addicted to

smoking can get assistance from their doctors to help them get through the addiction. It is not

easy so support from families and friends will help make progress. However, the best way of

solving smoking habits is by prevention. Never starting the habit.

This brings me to the end of my speech and from what we have seen and heard,

smoking is ruining a lot of lives with the youth being in line for the next phase due to electronic

cigarettes. The best way is to save the young generations coming. Cigarette manufacturers put a

lot of effort to discover means to make sales and profits, therefore we are the ones to take care of

our health. Let us all be alert.
