How non-profits use customer relationship management (CRM) to fulfill their missions.

About this eBook

Non-profit organizations measure their bottom lines on a different scale than their
corporate peers. The outcomes that matter often come down to funds raised and constituents
served. Despite this fundamental difference, businesses and non-profits still have much in common.
Both types of organizations must initiate, nurture and grow relationships with “customers” – whether
those are actual consumers or donors, volunteers and the public. At the same time, both businesses and
non-profits must manage their resources wisely, plan for the future and pursue goals aggressively
– regardless of how many (or few) people they have on their teams. Just as customer relationship
management (CRM) systems can help small businesses succeed, they can help accelerate and grow
non-profit organizations.

This eBook is designed to help you determine why a CRM

solution is right for your non-profit organization. Insightly
surveyed 248 non-profit professionals who revealed how they
use CRM with project management to solve their biggest
problems. As these results show, CRM can help non-profits
maintain relationships, grow contacts and expand influence
to fulfill their missions.
The challenges facing non-profits...
Most non-profits are attempting to meet deep needs without deep pockets. They’re raising funds, and delivering
programs and services, often with limited staff and a mandate to maximize resources. No organization wants to
see wasteful processes – but for non-profits, the problems of such inefficiencies are magnified.

One of the primary areas where many non-profits

struggle is in donor management. When we asked
survey respondents about which donor management What kind of donor management
problems they faced before adopting CRM, one issue problems were you having prior to
rose to the top of the pile: organization. From the group implementing a CRM?
of customers surveyed, 71 percent indicated they had

In addition to donor management, many non-profits must close deals that bring in critical revenue. Chris
Nare, vice president of laboratory services and sales at a member organization of America’s Blood Centers, is
charged with this role. His efforts to track new business development, bring in new hospital customers, and
identify new FDA blood donor testing opportunities were challenging, especially when his growing organization
relied on a spreadsheet to manage these processes. Nare talks about the value of his CRM investment in terms
any organization can understand: “I spent $144 this year on Insightly and in my first six months using the
solution, I was able to close an account that was worth more than $500,000. To me, that is beyond valuable.”
In addition to streamlining processes and effectively tracking leads like America’s Blood Centers member organizations
must do, the non-profits we surveyed name donor management as their No. 1 pain point. In fact, 43 percent
of them said tracking donors, including their contribution activities, helps them share communication updates to
maintain more highly productive and personalized relationships.

Can a CRM make our non-profit team more productive?

To make sure as many funds as possible go directly to supporting its mission, a non-profit has to protect the productivity
of its team. This is where CRM has the potential to offer the greatest benefit to small staffs. When you can’t waste
time on menial tasks like sorting through business cards, scouring spreadsheets, or writing hundreds of emails, CRM
can make a significant difference. In addition to small staffs, many associations and non-profits have volunteer team
members. A CRM solution that is accessible and easy to use allows these transitional staff members to be on-boarded
quickly and seamlessly without extensive resources dedicated to training.
In our survey, we found that more than one-third of respondents had seen a staff productivity bump of more
than 50 percent after implementing Insightly. More than half of respondents said their productivity rates had
climbed between 10 and 49 percent.
