Project 3
Project 3: GD&T
Project Overview
In the first project, you created a set of parts that assemble to form the product of your choosing. The
third project will expand your prior work to include geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T),
in accordance with ASME Y14.5-2018. You will be required to address all aspects of GD&T, including
datum selection and control, application of feature control frames, etc.
Project Requirements
1) Apply appropriate geometric dimensioning and tolerancing to the eight drawings that you
completed for Project 1. This should include:
Adding size tolerances where appropriate.
Identify and control datum features.
Apply feature control frames, as appropriate, to other features on the part.
The GD&T applied to the drawing should ensure proper assembly and function,
especially where two of the components assemble together.
Note: Every feature and/or surface should be toleranced in some way. You will lose points if you
skip or ignore features of the part.
2) Provide a written discussion that explains your rationale for all applied tolerancing. Each part
should be discussed separately.
Submission Details
Projects will be uploaded to UBlearns before the due date listed in the syllabus. You will need to
upload the following:
*See Appendix A for an example of how to format the drawing and explanation in the document.
2) PDF files for the 8 part drawings. You will lose point if the drawings are not properly exported as PDF
files. These files will be used for reference if needed.
IMPORTANT NOTES
The image is a high-quality screen shot of the exported PDF. It should fill the entire page width so that
it can be easily viewed in the document. Do not rotate the image- it makes it very difficult to read.
A detailed explanation of your thought process is required for full credit. This will allow us to gauge
your full understanding of GD&T.
The size tolerance is controlling the flatness of datum A (rule #1). Datum B is perpendicular to datum B,
with MMC utilized to ensure fit with the stationary jaw.
A third datum is needed to remove the last translational degree of freedom. The surface where the grip
plate is mounted is selected for datum feature C, as this interface is more important than the clamp
screw surface. This datum is controlled to be perpendicular to both datum A and datum B. A flatness
control is also added due to the clamped interface with the grip plate.
There is also a ledge that the grip plate aligns with. It is important that this ledge does not come inside
of the grip plate boundary. Profile is used to control this location, with a unilateral tolerance zone
where there is zero variation outside of the part (the entire tolerance zone is inside the part).
