The key takeaways are that this pattern teaches cabling, a technique that adds sophistication to knitting. It also details how to knit a semi-circular cabled shawl.

The knitting technique featured is cabling, which involves twisting stitches to create cable patterns in the knitting.

The dimensions of the finished shawl are approximately 14.5” height x 82.5” width, blocked.

-ETUDE NO. 5 SHAWL-

Cabling is one of those knitting techniques that is often feared without reason. They’re
actually quite easy to work, and add a sophisticated flair to an otherwise simplistic piece of
knitwear. In this lesson, the garter stitch body of a semi-circular shawl is jazzed up by a
repeating cabled border in twisted rib. It might sound complicated, but the pattern is
easily memorized and fun to knit. You’ll turn heads every time you wear this piece!

NOTES
•This shawl is worked from side to side in one piece, with the cabled border worked as you go.
Shaping is worked by simple increases and decreases in the garter stitch body.
•When working with hand-dyed yarns, remember to alternate skeins every couple of rows to avoid
color pooling. To avoid issues with the cabled border, I recommend alternating skeins on the garter
stitch side of the shawl, at the beginning of WS rows.
•Cable instructions for this pattern are available in this video. On row 9 of the cable pattern, you will
switch knits and purls for those sts worked from the cable needle, so you will be purling knits and
knitting purls. This is intentional, and the difference will not be visible due to the large cable.
