Countable and Uncountable Noun

⁂ Countable Nouns CAN Be Counted

1. They often have the article “a/an” before if they are singular. The real meaning of “a”
is “one”.
 There is an orange in the fridge.
 I need a pen.
2. You add an “s” to plural count nouns (regular plural nouns).
 There are oranges in the fridge.
3. You can use “many” with count nouns if they are plural.
 I have many friends.
 How many friends do you have?
⁂ Uncountable Nouns CAN NOT Be Counted

1. There is no “s” at the end – always singular.


 Non-countable: one luggage two luggages (THIS IS WRONG!)
2. You use “much” with uncountable / non-countable nouns.
 I don’t have much money.
 I did much homework.
Know the Different Categories of Uncountable Nouns

knowledge, nature, peace, space, news, etc.

mail, money, etc.
aluminum, asphalt, chalk, cloth, concreate, cotton, glue, lumber,
Materials
wood, wool, etc.
chess, homework, housework, music, reading, singing,
Activities
sleeping, baseball, tennis, work, etc.
Particles / Grains corn, dirt, dust, flour, hair, pepper, rice, salt, sugar, etc.
Some non-countable nouns have countable noun counterparts but with different meanings.
Here are some examples:

 iron [noncount] : The chain is made of iron.  as material


 iron [count] : The hotel will provide irons.  as electric appliances for pressing clothes

 paper [noncount] : Books are made of paper.  material


 paper [count] : I left my papers on the desk.  document

 chicken [noncount] : Chicken is a heart-healthy meat.  food


 chicken [count] : There were a dozen chickens in the yard.  living animal

 coffee [noncount] : Too much coffee makes me nervous  liquid


 coffee [count] : We would like two coffees, please.  cups oof servings of coffee

 glass [noncount] : It’s a huge window made from glass.  substance


 glass [count] : She poured some milk into a glass.  container
