WELCOME

Welcome to the first all-Canadian production of Kinky Boots! Although it’s

two years later than we originally planned (we think you know why!), we are
so glad to finally have you here. Thank you for your support.

We hope you’re excited about our 2022– 2023 season, which starts right
here at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage in September. Onstage you
will see Peter Pan Goes Wrong, Forgiveness, Sense

and Sensibility, The Legend of Georgia McBride, and Beautiful: The Carole
King Musical, as well as our returning holiday hit The Sound of Music.

At the Granville Island Stage, catch the new Mom’s the Word: Talkin’ Tur-
key, followed by The Cull, Rubaboo, and an all-new production of Million
Dollar Quartet. And at our Newmont Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre, in
Olympic Village, push your boundaries a little with Redbone Coonhound,
Me Love BINGO!: BEST IN SNOW, and Teenage Dick.

You can lock in the best seats and save by renewing or purchasing your
2022– 2023 season ticket package now! Just go to artsclub.com or talk to
our friendly box office staff at 604.687.1644. If you are able, please take the
opportunity to show your support with a tax-deductible donation with your
subscription. Now more than ever, we need theatre. And theatre needs
you.

Finally, you may have noticed our Stanley lobby refresh this season. We
wanted to create a lighter and more airy space to welcome you back, de-
signed by our great friend Drew Facey. Sadly, this was our last opportunity
to work with Drew before he passed away in May.

Drew recently designed the sets, or sets and costumes, for productions like
The Sound of Music, Cost of Living, The Matchmaker, The Curious Incident
of the Dog in the Night-Time, and Onegin, and his work always brought the-
atrical magic to our stages. He will be greatly missed, not only for his stun-
ning contribution to our art form, but also for the positive spirit and love he
brought to his work here at the Arts Club and many companies locally and
across the country.

Thank you, Drew. You remain in our hearts. Always.

Yours,

Ashlie and Peter

ASHLIE CORCORAN artistic director (on leave)

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The Arts Club Theatre Company would like to acknowledge that this pro-
duction takes place on the ancestral, traditional, and unceded territories of
̓
the Coast Salish Peoples, in particular the xwməθkwəy əm (Musqueam),
Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səlili̓ lwə̓ taʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) First Na-
tions. We are honoured to live, work, and play on this land together.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Ladies, gentlemen, and those beyond the binary—welcome to Kinky Boots.

This show is a celebration on so many levels; of love, humanity, friendship,

beauty and of course BOOTS! Based on a true story, with music by Cyndi
Lauper (one of my childhood idols), and script by Harvey Fierstein—it’s a
terrific ride. And boy, in these weird and wild times, we need something to
bring us joy. Kinky Boots is just that; the story of how two humans over-
come their own challenges to come together and create not only boots, but
friendship and understanding. And it’s ultimately love that unites them.
I have learned so much in the process of putting up Kinky Boots. In 2018,
when I was originally asked to direct this production, I thought...I don’t know
anything about Drag. That launched me into a culture and art form that I
have become immersed and obsessed with. From Paris Is Burning to Ru-
Paul’s Drag Race to our local scene, it has opened my eyes and my heart
to the journey that is Drag. What I’ve learned, is that Drag is more than just
putting on a costume and makeup and Kinky Boots! It is about having the
courage to express your inner self and celebrating the freedom to be, un-
abashedly, who you want to be. It is an act of activism, that historically has
called for LGBTQ2S+ rights, at Stonewall, Pride, and beyond. And even in
its current, more mainstream form, it teaches others how imperative it is
that we are allowed to love who we love and be who we want to be. It cre-
ates a place of love and acceptance—something we could all use more of.

I feel so honoured to have directed Kinky Boots, and with this amazing
team, I think we have created something really special. It’s easy to do that
when you have such incredible humans as part of the process.

On behalf of the Kinky Boots team—and in Lola’s words: “Let love shine, let
pride be your guide. You change the world when you change your mind.”

Barbara

Barbara Tomasic director

QUEER GLOSSARY

We’ve created this bite-size queer glossary to help foster understanding of

words and ideas used throughout Kinky Boots that may be unfamiliar. This
was compiled by Rae Takei, the Cultural Consultant for the show, with defi-
nitions provided by QMUNITY. To learn more terminology, check out this
link: QMUNITY’s comprehensive Queer Glossary

Cross-dresser: Refers to people who wear clothing traditionally associated

with a different gender to that with which they identify. Some cross-
dressers identify as trans while others do not. Cross-dresser, or cross-
dressing, was a frequently used term before the evolution of contemporary
trans-related language; today, some people may find this term offensive.
Some cross- dressers prefer to do so privately, while others cross-dress
publicly all or part of the time. Cross-dressers may or may not have a gen-
der identity related to the clothing they are wearing. “Cross- dresser” has
generally replaced the term “transvestite.”

Drag Performers: Refers to people who dress in a showy or flamboyant

way that exaggerates gender stereotypes, often for purposes of performa-
tive art and/or entertainment. Within drag performances, there can be Drag
Kings, Queens, and Performers. Some people who perform professionally
outside of queer communities prefer the term “male/female impersonator.”

Gender: The social construction of concepts such as masculinity and femi-

ninity in a specific culture in time. One may identify as being a man,
woman, or another gender. It involves gender assignment (the gender des-
ignation of someone at birth), gender roles (the expectations imposed on
someone based on their gender), gender attribution (how others perceive
someone’s gender), and gender identity (how someone defines their own
gender). Fundamentally different from the sex one is assigned at birth.

Gender Expression: How one outwardly expresses gender; for example,

through name and pronoun choice, style of dress, voice modulation, etc.
How one expresses gender might not necessarily reflect one’s actual gen-
der identity.

Gender Identity: One’s internal and psychological sense of oneself as

man, woman, both, in between, neither,
or another understanding of gender. People who question their gender
identity may feel unsure of their gender or believe they are not of the same
gender they were assigned at birth.

Gender Non-Conforming (GNC): A term under the trans umbrella which

refers to people who do not conform to society’s expectations for their gen-
der roles or gender expression.

Gender Policing: The imposition or enforcement of normative gender ex-

pressions/roles on an individual
who is perceived as not adequately performing, through appearance or be-
haviour, the gender that they are perceived to be. Gender policing occurs
through ridicule, trivialization, laws and policies, exclusion, harassment,
or violence. It may also occur through social messages that privilege cis-
gender expression and heteronormative gender roles.

Gender Roles: The socially constructed and culturally specific behaviours

such as communication styles, careers, family roles, and more, imposed on
people based on their biological sex assigned at birth. It is important to note
that gender interpretations and expectations vary widely among cultures
and often change over time. Some cultures have more than two genders,
and consequently more than two gender roles.

Pronouns: A word used to refer to someone, without using their name(s).

It is important to not make assumptions about the pronouns a person may
use about themselves; in the same way you might introduce yourself with
your name and then ask for someone else’s name, you can do so with pro-
nouns.

Transgender (Trans, Trans*): Transgender, frequently abbreviated to

“trans” or “trans*” (the asterisk was intended to actively include non-binary
and/or non-static gender identities such as genderqueer and genderfluid,
but has fallen out of frequent use throughout the 2010s), is an umbrella
term for a wide range of experiences and identities for people whose gen-
der does not match with the gender they were assigned at birth. Identifying
as trans is something that can only be decided by an individual for them-
selves and does not depend on criteria such as surgery or hormone treat-
ment status.

Transvestite: A medical term that was historically used to label cross-

dressing as a mental illness and sexual perversion. This term is outdated,
problematic, and generally considered offensive. See also: Cross-dresser
