(b) If Brian’s age is multiplied by 5, it exceeds Nigel’s age by 21 years. One-quarter of 3


Nigel’s age is less than Brian’s age by 4 years.
Let Brian’s age be b years and Nigel’s age be n years. By forming simultaneous
equations, find their ages.

(d) The volume and surface area of a steel drum are 8 m3 and 12 m2 respectively. 2

(a) Two aeroplanes have the same size fuel tanks, but one will travel for 21 hours on a 3
full tank and the other for 35 hours on a full tank. They set off at the same time with
full tanks and both planes burn fuel at a constant rate. After how long will one have
three times as much fuel left as the other?

(b) Solve the following equations simultaneously to find x and y in terms of p and q: 3

(c) David had a piece of wire of length 200 cm and cut it into two pieces. He then formed 3
the first piece into an equilateral triangle and the second piece into a square, such
