RECAP: (Let me have a review on our topic before we continue)

 As we have shared last time, the book of Hebrews was written to encourage the early Christians who for various
reasons are considering/ who are tempted to go back to their former religion {Judaism- belief in one God (God the
Father)}. Maybe because they are still immature and they lack understanding on biblical truths (gives confusion),
and they are in persecution around them (may it be Jews or Romans). Jesus Christ did not yet return to establish
His Kingdom and so the Christians in this time need to be reassured that Christianity is true and that Jesus is truly
the Messiah.
 That’s why the author shows the superiority of Christianity/superiority of Jesus Christ over Judaism and even
over everything in this world. (Chapter 1-3:6)
1. The superiority of Jesus over the Prophets
2. The superiority of Jesus over the Angels (even in His humanity)
3. The superiority of Jesus over Moses, one of their great leader
4. The superiority of Jesus over Aaron (the earthly Priest)
 The author also emphasizes Jesus as the Great Salvation in chapter 2 that we need not ignore and so the First
Warning was given for to pay attention to what we have heard so that we will not drift away

 And then the Second warning of unbelief contain in God’s Word was given wherein the Israelite people except of
Caleb & Joshua did not enter the promised land. The have heard the message but it has no value to them because
those who have heard the message did not combine it with faith. (Chapter 3:7-19)

 But the promise of entering God’s rest remains until today, it was confirmed by God because He Himself rested
after His creation. We who have believed enter that rest (4:3) for we have the peace of God through our
relationship with God through Jesus Christ. The call for us today is to persevere to enter the promised rest of God,
the complete/perfect rest…our future eternal rest with God (above the World)……that’s why let us be faithful,
remain faithful and be more faithful to our God as we are waiting for this perfect rest to come….Amen! (Chapter 4:1-
11)

 Last Saturday, we have shared that the Word of God is Powerful (Chapter 4:12-14)
All His promises, the covenants he made and all the words He has said are powerful (dunamis- it has miraculous
power, it has strength) and it will be fulfilled

I. The Word of God is powerful v12 …because

A. it is living (God himself is a living God and His words gives renewed life (that’s how powerful
His word is)
because it is active (may movement, effective and capable to produce result) it is continuously
Advancing (Isaiah 55:11 it will not return empty)

B. Sharper than any double-edged sword penetrates even to the dividing soul and spirit, joints and
marrows.
 A methapor used by the author to emphasized the how powerful the word of God is, how
effective it is in our life
 The function of word of God is not only for nutrients/vitamins in our spiritual life (body,
soul & spirit) but also to cut (like the double-edged sword) our bitter roots/sinful nature to
be effectively use in the ministry

C. The word of God is Perceptive v12

 It can discern/Judge the thoughts and intent of the heart
 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (teaching, rebuking, correcting, training)

II. God Himself is powerful and He sees everything v13

 Nothing can be hidden in God’s sight, even the deepest secret we have he can see it, even the things
we do not know we have, He can reveal it to us whom we will give account (1 Cor. 4:5)

As we continue our topic with a title of Jesus Our Great High Priest found in Hebrews 4:14-16 (mentioned also in 3:1)

JESUS CHRIST OUR GREAT HIGH PRIEST

Hebrews 4: 14-16
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly
to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we
have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne
of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

INTRODUCTION
The word therefore indicates a summary of the preceding verses followed by specific action…… The preceding verses
reminds his readers not to ignore and disobey the Word of God (the great salvation they have heard). The author
encourages them to persevere to enter the promise rest of God also and the preceding verses also says How powerful the
Word of God & God Himself and that we cannot hide anything that we must give account……and so the author introduce
the idea that Jesus is also a high priest.
The high priest for the Jews was the highest religious authority in the Land. We can see in Leviticus 16 the once a year he
is entering the MHP to make atonement for the sins of the people
Like the high priest for the Jews Jesus is also a high priest who intervenes between God and us….Amen!
{Hom. Idea}
Therefore, since we have a GREAT HIGH PRIEST, Jesus Christ, who has already ascended to heaven and thus,
becomes our MEDIATOR, let us have the confidence to approach God’s throne of grace so that we may receive
mercy and find grace to HELP us in our time of need…..Amen!
I will be sharing 3 things this morning regarding Jesus as our Great High Priest…..
1. JESUS CHRIST OUR GREAT HIGH PRIEST v14
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold
firmly to the faith we profess.
 High Priest in Greek is “arxiereús” (ar-khee-er-yuce)

(from “arxḗ” means "chief, pre-eminent one (surpassing others/greatest" and “hiereús” means "a
priest"
 a chief-priest, a leader among priests.

 No Jewish high priest is referred to as great but for Christian we have great high priest . In Jewish priestly
system, the Priests could go before God on behalf of the people to thank, make requests and atone for sin
(Leviticus 16).
 The author states that Christians also have not only a high priest but a great high priest

Hebrews 2:17
17 For this reason he had to be made like them fully human in every way, in order that he might become a
merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.
 He Himself become the atonement for the sin of the people that make Him greater than the Jewish priestly
system

Hebrews 3:1
Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high
priest whom we confessed.

 He is the high priest whom we acknowledged and believed as sent by God

 The Christian's high priest is in heaven. While Jewish priests served here on earth,

 As Christian's representative in heaven, He is appealing/intercedes for us before God and As God’s

representative He assures us of God’s forgiveness
 Jesus has more authority than the earthly priest because He is truly God and truly man.
 He is always at the right hand of God interceding for us.
 The people should be encouraged because our high priest is already in heaven, we need to keep our faith,
to persevere in our faith.
15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been
tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.
2. JESUS CHRIST OUR GREAT MEDIATOR 15
 Even though Jesus, as Son of God and high priest, is in heaven with God, this does not mean He cannot
relate/connect to the problems of human suffering and failure.
 He, as a man, was tested by Satan and by the limitation of humanity and yet did not sin.
 The suggestion is that in Him we have the perfect mediator. One who can understand and sympathize
with our weaknesses but, at the same time, can stand boldly before God on man's behalf (our
representative before God) because He Himself has no guilt or condemnation due to sin.

2 Corinthians 5:21
21 Christ had no sin, but God made him become sin so that in Christ we could be right with God.

 He experience every kind of temptation we experience today but He id different because He was never
tempted, now in heaven he understand our weaknesses and temptations and offers forgiveness.

16Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help
in time of need.
3. JESUS CHRIST OUR GREAT HELPER V16
 Since Jesus knows the power of sin (He was tested), the weakness of men (He was fully human) and the
mercy of God (He had a divine nature), His followers can approach God with confidence through our
prayer
 He has gone before them and prepared the way and now tells them that if they come in His name, they
will find mercy and God's help when they need
it.

Hebrews 10:19
22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our
hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.

Hebrews 10:22
19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of
Jesus,

CONCLUSION
Therefore, since we have a GREAT HIGH PRIEST, Jesus Christ, who has already ascended to heaven and thus,
becomes our MEDIATOR, let us have the confidence to approach God’s throne of grace so that we may receive
mercy and find grace to HELP us in our time of need…..Amen!
