Self Learning Module 2
Speed, Distance and Time
Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Science Grade 5 Self Learning Module 2 on Speed, Distance and
Time!
This Self Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by
educators from Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-In-Charge
Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin in partnership
with the Local Government of Pasig through its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma. Regis
N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the
Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) while overcoming their personal,
social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners
as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:

Welcome to the Science Grade 5 Self Learning Module 2 on Speed, Distance and
Time!
The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often used to
depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create and
accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a learner
is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant competencies and
skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in your own hands!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning material while being an active learner.

D. mile
RECAP

Before we proceed with the new lessons, let us try to do simple activity to help
you freshen up and recall our past lesson. Ready? Get your notebook or your paper
and pen then be ready to record/write your answer.

1. A change in a position is called_______________.

2. Motion of object in a circular path is called _____________ motion.
3. Motion of the object in straight line path is called ____________ motion.
4. Motion of an object which repeats itself after a certain period of time is called
____________ motion.
5. A ______________________ is a fixed place or an object used to determine the
position of an object.

It is good to know that you really learned a lot from our past lesson.
Now, are you ready for our next topic?

LESSON

Motion means a change in position of an object from the place it started. The
illustration shows the motion of a boy running a 100-meter dash from the starting
line to the finishing line for 14 seconds. What is the speed of the boy? What is the
distance run by the boy? How man seconds was he able to reach the finish line?

Speed

Speed shows how fast the motion of an object. It shows the relationship
between distance reached by a moving object and the period of time spent.

Speed = Distance
Time

Fast motion of a racing car

Distance
Distance is the separation between things, places, or locations. It is the
separation between positions of time and space. How far is your home from the
school? Or how far is the church from your home? Distance is measured in metric
units. We use meter for a shorter distance and kilometers for a farther distance.
The length of an object moves through its motion is called the distance.

If you are asked about the distance between your school and your home, what
unit of measure will you use? Why?

Do you know that we adopt the simplified version of metric system – the
International System of Units? This is the reason why our basic unit of length is
meter.

Distance = Speed x Time

In computing for the distance, we have to multiply speed and time.

Example: A shopping cart runs a horizontal plane at 40 meter per second for 10
seconds. What is the distance run by the cart?

Distance = Speed (40 meter per second) x Time (10 second)

= 400 meters

Social Distancing A map showing the distance between two places

Distance between two vehicles

Time

Time is measured in terms of seconds, minutes, hours, days, or years.

If your school is nearer your home you do not need to ride any vehicle. You just
walk. If you start walking from 6 o'clock in the morning, arrive school at 6:30, the
time that it took you to walk the distance is 30 minutes.

The motion of an object takes time to occur. Moving from one place to another
happens within a period of time. This time interval is called the elapsed time.

Your service fetched you up at 7:00 a.m. and reached school at 7:30. Your motion
which is the travel from home to school took place between 7:00 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.
The difference between the time indicates the elapsed time of your travel to school.

Example: Elapsed time = 7:30 a.m. - 7:00 a.m. = 30 minutes. What is the elapsed
time?

Time = Distance
Speed

In computing for Time, we have to divide Distance and Speed.

Example: You travel a distance of 80 kilometers at a speed of 40km/hr. How long

was your trip?

Time = Distance (80 kilometers)

Speed (40km/hr)

= 2 hours

Shows the time of each individual in a race

ACTIVITIES

Activity 1 Identify it!

Directions: Identify what is being asked.

1. It means a change in position of an object from the place it started.

_______________________.
2. This time interval is called the _____________________.
3. It shows the relationship between distance reached by a moving object
and the period of time spent. ____________________.
4. It is the separation between positions of time and space.
______________________.
5. Basic unit of length is _______________.

Activity 2 Time to Travel!

Directions: Solve the following problems.
1. A car is travelling a distance of 180 kilometers at a speed of 60km per hour.
How long will it travel on the road?
2. The man runs at a speed of 50kph and had a time of 3hours when it reached
its destination. How far did the man travel?
3. A rock falls on top of a 100 meter building with a speed of 5meter per second.
How fast will it reach the ground?

Cardo starts to travel by his car from Pasig City at 5:00 a.m. and reached
Tagaytay City at 10:00 a.m. Based on the diagram, how many kilometers did he travel
from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.? How many hours, did it take Cardo to reach Tagaytay?
WRAP-UP

We go to school from Monday to Friday, after class we go home. It is a routine

that we do all the time. But do you ever tried to measure the distance of your school
to your home? Let’s Try It!!!

Get the distance between your school and your home. You left your home early
in the morning, you walk at a speed of 10 meters per minute and reached your school
after 20 minutes of walking. How far is your home to your school?
