India plays a crucial role in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), a regional

organization comprising of eight member countries - India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri
Lanka, Afghanistan, and the Maldives. Some of the roles of India in SAARC are:

Leadership: India is the largest and most influential member of SAARC, both in terms of population
and economy. As a founding member, India has played a key role in shaping the organization and
providing leadership to its member countries.

Trade and Economic Cooperation: India is a major trading partner of many SAARC countries and has
been actively promoting trade and economic cooperation within the region. India has also provided
financial assistance and technical expertise to help develop infrastructure and promote economic
growth in the region.

Connectivity: India has been working to improve connectivity within the SAARC region through
initiatives such as the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation Motor Vehicles Agreement,
which aims to facilitate the movement of goods and people across borders.

Regional Security: India has taken a leading role in promoting regional security and stability in the
SAARC region, including initiatives to combat terrorism and transnational crime.

Cultural and Educational Exchange: India has been promoting cultural and educational exchange
among SAARC countries, including through initiatives such as the SAARC Cultural Centre and the
SAARC Scholarship Scheme.

Overall, India's role in SAARC has been instrumental in promoting regional cooperation and
integration, and in addressing the various economic, social, and security challenges faced by the
member countries.
