For example, consider someone who believes that


people who are left-handed are more creative than persons who are right-handed. When this
individual meets someone who is both left-handed and creative, they place a larger emphasis on the
"proof" that backs up their beliefs. This person may go so far as to seek proof that supports their
belief while dismissing examples that contradict it.

IN METHODOLOGY- And also, when it comes to current beliefs, confirmation bias is more
powerful since we are more inclined to undertake evidence that supports that opinion and
carefully evaluate evidence that contradicts it.
Importance of the Study
The importance of the study is to understand the rapidly growing discipline of behavioural
economics that has revealed a number of reasons why the judgement under uncertainty is
inaccurate as a description of the cognitive processes that underpin human decision making.

Slide 4- I have done a survey to check the effect of confirmation bias on different situations
that are related to people’s decision making and also in confirming their beliefs. I have taken
67 responses and all of them are the students of Stella Maris College. I have taken totally
three situations to do the survey. The first situation goes like this. Imagine you admire an X
politician because of his good deeds that he does to the society like helping poor people with
their basic needs and providing free education to girls. Recently, you've come across two
articles about the politician. The first one was about praising him for funding a huge sum of
money to a charitable trust and the second article was about him getting accused of
murdering his colleague. Now when I asked them which article they would trust more,
around 40 subjects (59.7%) gave their answer as the first article. Around 7 subjects (10.4%)
have given their answer as the second article. The remaining 20 subjects (29.9%) gave it as
none of the above. By this, it can be seen that the confirmation bias applies here. Majority of
people tend to confirm their initial belief i.e. They admire the politician. So to confirm their
initial hypothesis they have chosen the information that supports it.
Now in the second scenario, I have given the subjects to visualize that they work in a
company and they found their HR manager to be rude and bossy. Their colleagues had the
same opinion as them on the HR manager. When I have asked them if they would confirm
their beliefs according to their own experience or other people’s opinions, the majority of
them gave their answer according to their own experiences i.e, 52 subjects. (72.6%). This
proves that the confirmation is again present also in entrepreneurship side as people would
usually confirm their beliefs relating to their own experiences when their decisions are
affected by any cognitive bias.
  In the final situation, I have given them to imagine their friend telling them that the mango
flavored ice cream tastes great at this particular shop. And they believed what she said and
decided to try it out assuming it to be so yummy. Later, they've seen a few customer reviews
saying that the mango flavored ice cream is not that great. Then, I have questioned the
subjects if they would still go to the shop to try out the ice cream by themselves. Surprisingly,
32 subjects (47.8%) gave their answer as maybe they would go to the shop. With only around
1% difference, 31 subjects (46.3%) gave it as they would definitely go to the shop to try out
the ice cream by themselves. Only 4 subjects (6%) gave it as no. ## In the same scenario, I
have also asked them if they would change their initial belief after seeing the reviews about
the ice cream. Majority of them said no i.e, 23 subjects (34.3%) and amazingly 22 subjects
each (32.8%) gave their answers as both maybe they would change their beliefs and
definitely change their beliefs.
By this scenario, though we can see the confirmation bias, it is not that effective as the
remaining two situations as we see only a slight difference with the percentages. But the
confirmation bias still exists in the majority of the students affecting their decision making.

Confirmation bias occurs because our biological hardwiring makes it easier for us to understand
confirming facts, especially when the opposing data is presented in a negative light.

To put it another way, we are all biased to some degree. It's a natural element of being human.
However, confirmation bias frequently inhibits us from maturing and making great life adjustments.

People's perceptions and life experiences limit their access to information, resulting in limited access
and overreaching misinterpretations.Understanding such distinctions and being able to see the
world through the eyes of others is critical to formulating effective strategies and overcoming
confirmation bias.
