Test scoring:

“Score” means the value given to the test subject’s performance on a standardized test,
administered by the test agency, whether reported in numerical, percentile or any other form .

Example :

(Army physical fitness Test score card), showing a minimum of the last five record tests with
the most current test not older than one year.

1 ESSAY TYPE TEST.

DEFINITION:

Essay test is a test that requires the student to compose responses, usually lengthy up to
several paragraphs.

Distinctive feature of essay test :

The distinctive feature of essay type test is the “freedom of response”. Pupils are free to
select, relate and present Ideas in their own words.

Uses of Essay Test

• Assess the ability to recall, organize, and integrate ideas.

• Assess the ability to express oneself in writing.

• Ability to supply information.

 Assess student understanding of subject matter.

• Measure the knowledge of factual information.

Types of essay type test :

 Restricted Response/ Controlled Response.


 Extended Response/Uncontrolled Response.
 Restricted Response Essay Questions.

Restricted response usually limits both the content and the response by restricting the scope
of the topic to be discussed. Useful for measuring learning outcomes requiring interpretation
and application of data in a specific area .

Example of Restricted Response :

Describe two situations that demonstrate the application of the law of supply and demand.
Do not use those examples discussed in class. State the main differences between the
Vietnam War and previous wars in which the United States has participated

Limitations of Restricted Response Questions:

• Restricted response question restricts the scope of the topic to be discussed and indicating
the nature of the desired response which limits student opportunity to demonstrate these
behavior.

Extended Response Essay Questions:

Extended response question allows student to select information that they think is pertinent,
to organize the answer in accordance with their best judgment, and to integrate and evaluate
ideas as they think suitable. They do not set limits on the length or exact content to be
discussed.

Advantages Of Essay Questions

 The freedom of response allows the student to express himself in his own words.
 It measures complex learning outcomes that cannot be measured by other means.
 Essay tests promotes the development of problem-solving skills.
 It helps students to improve their writing skills such as writing speed .
 It encourages creativity by allowing their own unique way.
 Is easy and economical to administer.
 Essay item is easy to construct and does not take much time It can be used to measure
in-depth knowledge especially in a restricted subject matter area.
 It encourages good study habits in students.
 It does not encourage guessing and cheating during testing.

Disadvantage of Essay Question:

 Scoring is not reliable because different examiners can grade the score answer
differently. In fact, the same examiner can grade the same question differently at
different times.
 Grading of essay tests is time -consuming.
 Subjective scoring of essay questions.
 Essay questions do not cover the course content and the objectives as
comprehensively as possible.

2 Objective type test :


An objective type test is a test that has right and wrong answers and so can be marked
objectively. These tests are popular because they are easy to prepare and taken, quick
to mark and provide a quantifiable and concrete results.
These types of tests are pin-pointed, definite and so clear that a single, definite
answer is expected. The Scoring will not vary from examiner to examiner.

5. Shorts Answers

 Matching Items:
This type of test consists of two parallel columns. One column contains Words,
numbers or symbols that are to be matched with words, numbers or symbols given in
the second column by the examinees.

The Items in the column for which a match is sought called premises and the Items in the
column from which the selection is made are called responses.

 Multiple Choice Items:


It consists of a problem and a list of alternative selections. The problem may be stated
as a direct question or an incomplete statement. The list of suggested solutions may
include words, numbers, symbols or phrases. The options may either by two, three,
four or five but usually these are four.

 True/False Items:

In a tradition true/false questions, students are asked to judge whether a factual statement is
either true or false. Students have a higher probability of guessing the right answers in
true/false responses. True / False items are also referred as alternative -response questions,
are used to asses a students ability to determine whether a statement is correct.

 Completion Items:
The completion item requires the student to answer a question or to finish an
incomplete statement by filling in a blank with the correct word or phrase.

3. All India Muslim League was established in_______ at Delhi.

 Short Answers:

These items requires students to either complete a statement (fill in the Blank or completion
item) or answer a direct question using a single word or brief phrase

Short answers are also called supplied response or constructed response items. These
are an effective measure of a student’s ability to accurately recall specific, target
information. It has less scores.
Example:
Q. Answer these questions shortly;
a. Write the names of parts of plants?
b .How many types of assessments? Name them.

3 oral type test :

The process of conducting the test orally i.e., asking the questions orally and receiving the
answer orally from the students is called oral test.

Uses of oral test (Merits):

 It helps in testing the previous knowledge of the students. Based on the previous
knowledge, the teacher may easily impart the new knowledge.
 Oral questions put time to time, help the teacher in judging whether the students are
following the lesson or not.
 The teacher may easily pay individual attention by distributing all over the class.
 Oral questions help much in carrying out recapitulation and revision work through
proper practice or drill.
 Oral questions helpful in fixing the learning of new principles Formulae.
 It encourages healthy competition among the students.
 Oral questions help in developing the habit of exactness and precision.
 Oral questions help in creating as well as maintain interests of the Students in the
study.
 Oral questions develop the habit of quick learning and thinking and Therefore proves
a very economical device.
 It is used at the lower stages where it is difficult for the students to give written
response.

Demerits :

 It is a time consuming one.


 It does not extensively or efficiently measure all the abilities
 It permits inferences and favoritism of teachers.
 It leaves no permanent objective record of pupils performance.
 Its use on a mass scale is highly limited.
 It is highly subjective.
 It is not equally fair and just to all pupils.
