Electrical Design Report

1. GENERAL:

This report elaborates the General description of the electrical services FOR FEDERAL
DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF ETHIOPIA MINISTRY OF FINANCE RE INOVATION
AND EXPANTION BUILDINGS which are under constructing in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The main considerations made while preparing this electrical design are the need to consider
almost all requirements of such premises at an international as well as local standard EBCS
10 BS and IEC wiring regulations. Hence, all electrical/electronic facilities made part of the
final design.

The design consists of lighting system, power and socket outlets systems, telephone, Data
Systems and TV systems. Which are designed to provide safe and reliable, full facility
electrical systems to various parts of the building that the people might require, with due
attention also given to even distribution of these systems to sub sections of the buildings.

Following are details of each design components by taking in to consideration of the local
and international electrical standards, while every design is to be supplemented with specific
technical specifications, estimated bills of quantities as well as engineering estimate of the
materials and labor for execution of this project.

2. POWER DISTRIBUTION BOARDS AND PANELS

After considering all the electrical connected loads, the power demand for each block is
estimated accordingly. All these loads will be supplied from the existed utilities (existed
transformers and stand by diesel generators. of 1250KVA are recommended to supply these
loads.
The low voltage power distribution system throughout the buildings shall be via PVC
sheathed PVC insulated power cables of 0.6/1KV insulation strength.
Cable runs from the existed central main distribution board up-to the various main-
distribution boards of each blocks shall be inside rigid PVC conduits/pipes of appropriate size
wherever appropriate.
All panels will have sheet steel front doors and IP43 minimum protection with doors closed
and IP40 with doors open.
All final circuits are fed through PVC insulated conductors inside PVC conduits of respective
sizes. Twin socket outlets of 10/16A with grounding contact are provided in all office areas
work stations screw fixed to 60mm diameter recess boxes.

MDB ‘s Main distribution boards of each block have to be IP 40 minimum for flush or
surface mounted (depending on the its size), panel made of sheet steel enclosure or
equivalent.
All other sub distribution boards are indoor type, IP 23, and wall mounted, Flush/surface
mounted as required. All distribution panels should have separate Earthling bar for ground
contact and each incoming and outgoing circuits will be properly labeled.

Power cables to different Distribution boards are provided with due consideration to ampacity
and voltage drop.

Electrical Design Report

The following formulae are used for calculating 1-phase and 3-phase current respectively:
Single phase current (I) in amperes for a given apparent power S in KVA:

I1-ph = Sx103
V
Where V = Phase voltage in volts
Three phase current (I) in amperes for a given apparent power S in KVA:

I3-ph = Sx103
3xV
Where V = Line voltage in volts
Power cables are selected in such a way so as not to exceed a voltage drop of 4 % as per
EBCS_10.

Voltage drop in percent, V % for a given active power P in KW:

V % = L x P x 103 x 100
xAxVV

Where L = wiring distance in m

P = active power in KW
A = cross-sectional area in mm2
V = line voltage in volts
 = conductivity in mm2/xm ,cu =56

3. INTERIOR LIGHTING

Lighting installation are done in the premises with PVC insulated conductor of 2.5sqmm in
rigid thermoplastic conduit (that confirm to DIN 49017) of not less than 16mm diameter
under plastered wall or slab and/or ceiling. Plastic type Flush mounted junction boxes are
used where necessary.
Every circuit shall have its own neutral wire and the live wire shall be connected to the
switch. Switches for flush and surface mounting in lighting circuit shall be rated for 10A and
according to BS 3676.
The interior lighting is designed to provide adequate illumination levels (average maintained
lux) to be achieved for different areas.

3.1 NUMBER OF LIGHT FITTINGS

We have used the following formula to calculate the number of lamps from the requested
average lighting level (Illumination) the formula below is used.
N, No.of Lamps = (Eavgx Area)/(UF x DF x ɸ )
Eavg= Average lighting level
Area = Area of room (m2)
U F = Utilization factor
DF = Distribution factor
ɸ = Luminous flux per lamp (lumen)
However, we have also cross checked with the following formula how the average lighting
level (Illumination) is maintained as per the distributed number of lightings lightings.
From the formula above we have
UFxDFx ɸxN
Eavg =
A
Where Eavg= Average lighting level
A = Area of room (m2)
UF = Utilization factor
DF = Distribution factor
ɸ = Luminous flux per lamp (lumen)
N=No.of Lamps
Since we have used variety of light fittings per single room, we have
UFxDFx ɸ 1 xN 1 UFxDFx ɸ 2 xN 2 UFxDFx ɸnxNn
E1 =
A
, E2 = A
, …, En = A
And Eavg = E1+E2+…En, where n=1, 2, 3…

UFxDF
Eavg = x (ɸ1N1+ ɸ2N2+… ɸn*Nn)
A
Based on the above formula we have prepared following sample illumination levels of each
blocks.
