External Painting Quality Criteria
Issue: C

1 Introduction
This Manual describes the acceptance criteria applicable during paint presentation of qualified
external paint systems applied on a complete aircraft or finished sections or pre painted parts
(including the nacelles).

M2435 is applicable:
− to all programs:
• Single Aisle family including NEO (A318/319/320/321)
• Long Range family including A350 XWB (A330/340/350)
• Double Deck (A380)
− to all external paint activity performed under Airbus responsibility and external livery
drawings.

M2435 is not applicable on:

− painting for second hand Airbus aircraft
− all items not related to paint issues (without any effect on paint film continuity):
• structural surface (pinholes, shot peening areas, composite waves, blend,
porosity, half moon effect)
• dents/scratches
• sealant and seal aspect
− all painted contractual equipment (such as antenna, probes, …) covered by others
Airbus and supplier documentations)
− all hidden areas (area covered by an access panel and/or not visible when the Aircraft
is on Ground condition)
− Temporary protection application: Temporary protection, which duration is limited to
24 months, primarily intended for ground storage, and able to protect the aircraft
during conversion and associated flight test → refer to Appendix C.

The M2435 gives the minimum applicable quality criteria for Airbus supplier with regards
external paint activity. Additional criteria can be requested through dedicated technical note
provided by the Airbus design office.

2 Golden Rules

2.1 Conditions Required to Perform the Paint Presentation

The painting presentation is carried out inside a hangar with appropriate conditions of security,
accessibility, and under normally available hangar lighting conditions.

For industrial or availability reasons, the Paint presentation (or part of it) could be performed
outside. In this case, access to the zones inspected and weather conditions may not be optimum.

Minimum distance for visual check of an A/C (Aircraft) has to be greater than 1 m for all areas
and at all times.

For safety reasons (Foreign Object Damage (FOD) prevention, potential ATEX environment
(Explosive Atmosphere)) and to avoid damages, personal tooling is not permitted during the
paint presentation. Upon request, Airbus can provide dedicated tooling (individual portable
light, stands, ladders…).

The specific condition for exterior paint presentation are given in the D2940.0 §6.11 (Customer
Acceptance Program during Manufacturing & Delivery).

2.2 Minimum Distance & Time Required to Perform the Paint Presentation
The distance for visual check has to be performed at one meter or more for all areas and at
all times as stated within General Visual Inspection (GVI) definition.

General Visual Inspection (GVI) - A visual examination of exterior Painting, to detect obvious
damage, failure or irregularity. This level of inspection is made from one meter distance. A mirror
may be necessary to enhance visual access to all exposed surfaces in the inspection area. This
level of inspection is made under normally available lighting conditions such as daylight, hangar
lighting, flashlight or drop-light and may require removal or opening of access panels or doors.
Stands, ladders or platforms may be required to gain proximity to the area being checked.

The number of customer representatives for the paint presentation are given in the D2940.0
§ 6.11 (Customer Acceptance Program during Manufacturing & Delivery)

2.3 Process & Method

2.3.1 Measurement Process

• The acceptance criteria are based on the type and grading of the issue and the zone
where the issue is located.
• Each criteria is presented with an harmonized and detailed description covering:
− definition and pictures showing the acceptable/unacceptable items,
− possible restrictions according to paint system and method for control (measurement,
visual or tool check...),
− tolerance/value on what is acceptable/unacceptable (density, length, % areas...)
according to Aircraft zones.

• The Aircraft zoning is simple, logical, adaptable to current and future aircraft and usable
by all Airlines, considering sensitive areas visible from passengers. The zones, wherever
possible, are defined by actual physical boundaries (wing spars, panel junction...).
• Hidden areas are all areas or part of the Aircraft which are covered by an access panel
and/or not visible when the Aircraft is on Ground condition (i.e. Flights controls in retracted
position & systems components in nominal position: Ram Air Outlet closed, Auxiliary
Power Unit inlet closed…).
• For the overall aircraft external paint, a report will be delivered to the Customer about
Thickness, Gloss and Orange peel measurement (form reference FM1004405).
Measurements results are recorded in the appropriate form as described in the Appendix
B “Measurement Table (Thickness, Orange Peel, Gloss)”.

This customer report (Appendix B) mentions MSN identification, Aircraft type, date of paint
presentation, paint inspector name/stamp, table of results for thickness, orange peel,
gloss and the bands limit.

Note: If a measurement cannot technically be applied, it is mentioned as N/A (Not

Applicable) on the Customer Report.

Please refer to thickness, orange peel & gloss acceptance criteria tables for further
specifics restrictions (i.e. Shot penning (surface looks like Orange skin), semi-gloss
paint system (e.g. Top of the wings), Non metallic Parts (e.g. Vertical Tail Plane,
Belly Fairing).

In case of deviation on paint thickness value (refer to § 3.1 Thickness), a concession has
to be raised. C suffix required for value exceeding the SRM limit (Structure Repair
Manual).

For the other criteria listed in this manual no concession needed as cosmetic and not
impacting the A/C definition dossier.

Note: In case deviation to the external livery definition (marking, decoration) a C suffix
Concession can be raised to trace the non-conformity if no airworthiness impact
• Nacelles paint is measured and presented to the Airline at the supplier site and a
Customer report will be provided only upon Customer request according to the forms
described in the Appendix E “Nacelle Measurement Table”.

2.3.2 Measurement Method

Thickness/Orange Peel/Gloss

Each value reported and recorded in the Measurement table Appendix B is the result of the
average of a minimum of 3 measurements taken in each specified "Measurement area"
described in Appendix A.

For each Measurement areas, the at least 3 different measured points are taken across the
Measurement areas in order to be representative of the area.

This number of measurement is adapted function of the A/C type to take into consideration the
size of the A/C measurement area.

Remark:
− Technical marking (ref. Aircraft Maintenance Manual AMM P11-20-00 Exterior
Placards and Markings) are not considered as decoration and no measure are
performed at their specific location.

A350 XWB specificity for paint thickness measurement

The data reported in the customer report (ref. table Appendix B) are the paint schemes
thicknesses considering the relevant tolerances.

The tool developed for paint thickness measurement on composite parts uses the Lightning
Strike Protection (LSP) or carbon fibber as a reference measurement point.

Thus, the resin layer located on top of the LSP or carbon fibber has to be removed from the
measured values to obtain the paint scheme thickness.

Indeed, the measurement tool gives the overall dielectric thickness value= resin + paint (see
sketch below).

PAINT SCHEME thickness = Dielectric thickness - Resin layer thickness

2.3.3 Nacelles Measurement Method

For the Nacelles, measurement areas are Air Inlet, Fan Cowl, Thrust reverser and Common
Nozzle Assy according to the Right Hand side/Left Hand side Engine number (1, 2, 3, 4).

The methods of control (ISO, AITM...) can be different due to the fact that the nacelles
suppliers have their own qualification of the paint process and their own referential of
measurement. In any case the result of measurements must comply with the criteria defined in
this document.

No visible colour mismatch allowed between adjacent painted parts
Measured if any visual concerns: ∆E measured between adjacent panels
Measurement According to the AITM 2-0027AITM
method
Restrictions For mica paint system: Airbus cannot guarantee that the colour and particle concentration all over the aircraft painted
areas will have the same appearance as the colour of the approved painted sample. Colour cannot be measured for
technical reasons.
Colour shade criteria is not applicable on hidden areas (ref. § 1)
No colour shade measurement on fading areas, nor on doted area if minimum dot size is below 4 x 4mm.
Remarks Paint sample
− Sample has to be exposed to day light for 48 hours before visual comparison with aircraft (wait for colour
stabilization).
− Paint sample used at the paint definition freeze cannot be considered as a reference for colour shade measurement
as not stable along the time even if stored in dark condition.
Mica paint
− Due to the mica and/or high sparkle particles, all touch-up or rework may be visible and some cloudy or tiger strips
effects may occur due to non-homogeneous particle concentration.
− In case of mica spots occur then acceptance criteria are the same as inclusion criteria.

Specific case of Hoist point cover

In case of hoist point covers located in fading area, in mica paint

system, a colour mismatch may be noticed and is acceptable.

This is due to manufacturing process as hoist point covers are

painted separately from the aircraft and installed after final paint
completion.

In uniform colour area, a slight visual divergence may appear at

boundary of the adhesive pad around the edge.

This is due to physical paint behaviour which naturally concentrate at

edges (paint wettability at the edge) and may induce a visual divergence
which is acceptable.

3.10 Air-bubbles and Wrinkles on Adhesive Film
This paragraph defines the acceptable criteria function of the adhesive size.

For technical marking or decorative area adhesive film technology can be used.

These adhesive films having a different behaviour compared to paint material this may lead to some cosmetic visible aspects looking like air-
bubbles or wrinkles.

This is induced by some discontinuities of the aircraft structure on which the adhesive film is laid on and is related to the stiffness of the adhesive
film qualified for marking.

In these discontinuous areas the look like “air-bubble” or “wrinkle” are validated by engineering and are fully acceptable.

Example of discontinuous surfaces:

− Fasteners line:
Due to the protrusion or shape of the fastener head, some bubbles
appears (see picture). This effect cannot be avoided and is hence fully
acceptable when limited to the fastener head perimeter
− sealant bead
− panel edges…

Remark: The continuous adhesion around the fastener head, sealant bead…
ensure no peeling of the adhesive film in service.

Appendix C. Temporary Protection Application

Definition: The temporary protection corresponds to a washable protection layer applied when,
due to industrial reasons, an extra storage (on ground) is required. The duration is limited to
24 months. The duration is ensured under condition that the required touch-up due to
conversion activities and after flight tests are performed to maintain temporary protection layer
integrity on the required areas.

Remarks:
− Those Additional temporary protection application linked to conversion activities,
flights, post-delivery are not the object of a C/L item.
− Temporary protection can only reinforce protection for flight, but as it is not designed
to fly, proper adherence is not guaranteed. Local reworks performed after each flight,
when needed, are acceptable for the restoration of the protective layer.
− This temporary protection is known as PROPACO SC ® product.

• Application is performed as per Airbus Internal Rules/Process, and Airbus definition

drawings. The thickness criterion is defined in the Airbus specification and its tolerance is
not an issue as far as the temporary protection technical function is ensured.
• No additional temporary protection layer thickness measurement have to be performed
due to colour mismatch, because the application process (by roll and brush) ensures, the
minimum thickness.
• No cosmetic criteria apply during production/delivery process (those criteria only apply for
an external paint). M2435 is not applicable to temporary protection (PROPACO SC ®). As
far as the technical function is ensured mismatch colour, orange peel, micro bubbling,
gloss are not acceptance criteria until the protection film is not broken.
• Aircraft cleaning surface has to be ensured before temporary protection application.
Presence of foreign objects under the temporary protection layer is not acceptable (e.g.
tapes, grease, dirty areas). Once applied, this temporary protection cannot be cleaned
and dirty areas (e.g. traces, dirt, grease, …) will not be removed.
• Airbus Military will ensure the end customer is aware of the purpose of Propaco as a
temporary protection only, and that cosmetic criterion do not applied.
• Temporary protection has not to be applied on radome.
• Around Static ports the application will guarantee the air data system requirements.
• Nevertheless, presence of temporary protection on pre-painted parts/joints/windows or
other part not requiring application for protection, is acceptable provided related to
cosmetic consideration only, i.e. no technical function impacted (e.g. sensors, heated
areas, friction area, air intake, ...).
• Temporary protection drops, runs are acceptable provided related to cosmetic
consideration only, i.e. no technical function impacted (e.g. sensors, heated areas, friction
area, air intake, risk of temporary protection peeling or removing...).
• Inclusions are not acceptable while there is risk of the temporary protection film is broken.

• Temporary protection touch up before ToT, aimed at correcting areas with missing
temporary protection, but without cosmetic considerations, in particular colour
considerations with surrounding areas already protected. All touch-up will be performed
into two slots:
− one manufacturing slot before Hand Over,
− one after last Customer acceptance flight (before ferry flight), aiming at fulfilling the
above acceptance criteria.
Remark: These touch up has to ensure compliance with the allowance of basic primer
exposure to external condition given by engineering.
