Learning Activities
A. Introduction Day 1 Presentation
35 minutes In this lesson, you will be able to identify and discuss the different types
of steering system and its operation.

Activity 1. Before proceeding to our lesson, match the parts and processes
of human body in column A with same function of the parts and system of a
car in column B. Write only the letter of your answer in space provided
before the number.

B. Development Day 2 Read this

50 minutes
Vehicles are complex systems with many interrelated parts that
perform specific tasks. Human being is like a vehicle with internal-
combustion engine, which have complex functioning systems, that work
together to obtain the maximum performance. One of the systems in
vehicle is the steering system.
Steering System, in automobiles,
steering wheel, gears, linkages,
and other components, is used to
control the direction of a vehicle's
motion.

Figure 1.
Steering System

Types of Steering System:

1. Manual Steering System - is

a system where manual force
is used for the action
of steering the vehicle.

Figure 2.
Manual Steering System

2. Power Steering System – is a system that helps drivers steer the vehicle by
augmenting steering effort needed to turn the steering wheel, making it
easier for the vehicle to turn or maneuver.

TYPES OF POWER STEERING:
1. Hydraulic power steering - works by using a hydraulic system to
multiply force applied to the steering wheel inputs to the vehicle's
steered (usually front) road wheels.
2. Electrical or electro-hydraulic power steering – uses electric motor
designed to augment the steering commands made by drivers.

TYPES OF HYDRAULIC POWER STEERING:

1. Rack and pinion
2. Worm and roller
3. Recirculating ball and nut
4. Hydraustic/Gerotor

TYPES OF ELECTRICAL ELECTRO-HYDRAULIC POWER STEERING:

1. Rack and pinion
2. Column driven EPS
3. Pinion driven EPS
4. Rack driven EPS

C. Engagement Day 3 Activity 1

45 minutes In your notebook, answer these questions in two or three sentences.
1. What are the two types of steering system? Define each.
2. What is the difference between the power and the manual steering?
3. What is hydraulic power steering?
4. What is electrical or electro-hydraulic power steering?
5. Explain the advantages of a power steering vehicle.

D. Assimilation Day 4
55 minutes Activity 2. In a bond paper, create/design a mind map/chart to illustrate
different types of steering system.
