Note
Actual results from Simcenter Nastran may vary insignificantly from the results
presented in this document. This variation is generally due to different methods of
performing real number algorithms on different systems.

The purpose of these linear statics test cases is to verify the function of Simcenter Nastran using
standard benchmarks published by NAFEMS (National Agency for Finite Element Methods and
Standards, National Engineering Laboratory, Glasgow, U.K.).
These standard benchmark tests were created by NAFEMS to stretch the limits of the finite
elements in commercial software. All results obtained using Simcenter Nastran compare
favorably with other commercial finite element analysis software.
Understanding the Test Case Format
Each test case is structured with the following information:
● Test case data and information
o Physical and material properties
o Finite element modeling (modeling procedure or hints)
o Units
o Finite element modeling information
o Boundary conditions (loads and restraints)
o Solution type

There are two different boundary conditions. One is with simply supported Edges (see Fig.(a)).
The edges are supported on frictionless knife edges. Another is with Clamped Edges where all
edge freedoms are restrained (see Fig.(b)). Uniformly distribution load of pressure is applied
over whole area.

Quarter sysmmety model with 4*4 mesh of 8-nodeds quadratic isoprameteric thick shell

The long cylinder is under plane strain condition in axial direction, subjected to uniform and time-
varying internal pressure, non-uniform and time-varying temperature.
Results
The results of S401 and S402 match well with NAFEM target solution. The stress, equivalent
strain- plastic and creep on inner surface through time=0.0~3000.0 are shown in below table.
The equivalent plastic strain on inner surface, mid-thickness surface and outer surface is compared
between Sol401, Sol402 and NAFEM target solution and shown in below figures. Only time=0.0~2.0 is
shown because plastic strain stays unchanged after that.

Linkens, D. A. Selected benchmarks for material non-linearity. Volume 1, pp.21. NAFEMS, 1993.
This benchmark exercises the capabilities of a 2-D continuum with stress concentration
phenomena. This is a marked stress redistribution as the load increases which is manifested by
the stress state over wide areas traversing around the material yield surface.
Rigid, frictionless punch is pressed into a deep plate of finite width supported on a frictionless
plane.

A half-symmetry model of the plate was idealized by a uniform mesh of 80*64 eight-node
quadratic plane strain element (CPLSTN8) by SOL 401 and SOL 402.
Results
The graphs show the Simcenter Nastran Nonlinear SOL 401 and 402 compared to NAFEMS test
results at the point A (120,140) (Node 2009, Element 1978).

A half model with half symmetry constraint is used in the contact analysis. Geometry nonlinearity
is taken into accout.
Boundary Conditions
• Half vertical point load F = 17.5 kN is applied on the top point of cylinder due to symmetry.
• Symmetry displacement constraints (half symmetry) Ux=0 is added on X=0.
• Bottom surface of the foundation is fixed (Ux = Uy = 0).
Solution Type
● Contact pressure on cylinder against arc length distance from centre of contact(no
friction)-4 and 8 nodes plane strain elements
SOL 401 shows a oscillating type of behviour if the model is meshed with linear elements. This
can be improved by refined mesh. Here, the linear element mesh is refined by using quarter size
of original elements.

● Normal and tangential contact stress on cylinder against arc length distance from centre
of contact(friction coefficient = 0.1)-4 nodes plane strain elements
Here, SOL 401 uses refined mesh to avoid a oscillating type of behviour for the model meshed by
linear elements. The mesh is refined by using quarter size of original elements.
SOL 402
At center of contact, tangential contact stress of SOL 402 is a large value but tangential contact
stress of MSC.MARC and Abaqus are close to zero. The reason is that the center of contact has

3D Loaded pin
This test is a contact analysis of a cylindrical pin located in a cylindrical hole of a strip. The
diameters of the hole and the pin are identical. It is used to test receding contact area, curved
contact surface, deformable-deformable contact and friction stick-slip along the contact surface.
This document provides the input data and results for Benchmark 4 in report Advanced Finite
Element Contact Benchmarks. The tests were run on 4 and 8 nodes plane strain elements.
