2 Requirements
Pertinent guidelines for formulation changes and Base Oil Interchange (BOI) will normally be applied, as
well as rules for viscosity grade read-across (VGRA). However, the Volvo Group reserves the right to
make exceptions. Multiple Test Acceptance Criteria (MTAC) apply if multiple test limits are given.

3 Additional requirements
For final approval in accordance with this Volvo Group standard, the oil shall also meet the requirements
in ACEA E9 and/or API CJ-4. Furthermore, companies seeking approval in accordance with this Volvo
Group standard must have signed the ATIEL Letter of Conformance (see http://atiel.org/code-of-
practice/letters-of-conformance) if an ACEA E9 claim is made, and/or have a valid API license for the
relevant product(s) if an API CJ-4 claim is made.
4 Environmental aspects 7)
All chemical products used or sold by the Volvo Group shall be approved in Volvo’s internal health and
environmental assessment, in accordance with STD 900-0008. This assessment covers all products used
in the Volvo Group’s facilities as well as all products sold by the Volvo Group as spare parts. Each
individual product that is approved in this assessment is given a unique part number. The product shall
comply with national legislation in each country where the product is going to be used.
All changes (formulations, names, etc.) made to products which have been approved in accordance with
the above must be reported immediately to:
motiv@volvo.com
5 Approvals
Other viscosity grades, e.g. 5W-30, 5W-40 and 10W-40, may be approved as Volvo VDS-4, Mack EO-O
Premium Plus and Renault RLD-3. The requirements for engine oil 97486-10 apply to xW-30, while the
requirements for 97486-15 apply to xW-40 oils. For low-temperature viscosities, SAE J300 applies.
Complete approval forms shall be submitted for each marketed product. Forms shall be submitted
electronically to Function.lubricants@volvo.com. Forms can be requested via the same e-mail address.
When requesting approval(s), the marketing Oil Company must agree to participate in the Volvo Group
Monitoring Program. The monitoring program is administered by Test Engineering Inc., San Antonio, TX
(USA) and a fee is charged to cover analysis and administrative costs.

6 Footnotes
1) The base oil viscosity of the finished oil shall always be higher or equal to the base oil viscosity
of all test formulations used in the Mack T12, Cummins ISB and Cummins ISM tests.
2) MRV shall be measured at the temperature required for each respective viscosity grade in
accordance with SAE J300.
3) Additional requirements may apply for factory-fill and Volvo Group-branded products. These are
the unadjusted specification limits. Candidate oils shall conform with adjusted limits. Seal results
shall be presented along with adjusted specification limits.
4) If passing results in the Volvo T13 test (ASTM Dxxxx, WK50204) are obtained, only CLW and
TRWL data at the listed limits are required.
5) The results from ASTM D6894 can be used instead of COAT. In this case, the limit is max 8,0 %
(volume).
6) Test code for Volvo Powertrain Corp.
7) Only applies to factory-fill and Volvo Group-branded products.
8) According to Volvo GTT/Powertrain Engineering weighting factors.
