Climate change: Earth's giant game of Tetris - Joss Fong

Let’s Begin…
There's a game of Tetris happening on a global scale: The playing space is planet Earth, and all
those pesky, stacking blocks represent carbon dioxide -- a greenhouse gas that is piling up ever
more rapidly as we burn the fossil fuels that run our cars, factories and power plants. Joss Fong
outlines how this overload of CO2 leads to climate change and reminds us that, unlike Tetris, we
won't get an opportunity to start over and try again.

MAKE SURE YOU TAKE NOTES IF POSSIBLE
1- How does the greenhouse effect influence the climate on Earth?
a. It prevents Earth from getting too cold
b. It prevents earth from getting too hot
c. It traps heat from the sun
d. A and C

2- How much has CO2 increase in the atmosphere since 1750?

a. 15%
b. 20%
c. 40%
d. 65%

3- Which of the following energy sources uses fossil fuels?

a. Nuclear plants
b. Coal plants
c. Solar panels
d. Wind turbines

4- What role does the ocean play in the carbon cycle?

a. It releases CO2 into the air
b. It absorbs CO2 from the air
c. Neither A nor B
d. Both A and B

5- Melting ice causes Earth to arm even further

a. True; the ice would have reflected more sunlight away from Earth’s surface, like a white t-shirt
b. False; melting ice decreases ocean temperature this causing global cooling

6- How are fossil fuels used today?

7- How have humans altered the carbon cycle? Support your answer
8- What are some of the effects of climate change?

9- Scan the QR to calculate your carbon footprint emissions What’s your result?

10-Think of all the possible ways you can try to reduce your footprint

I might try to…………………………………………………………………………………………..

When it comes to…………………………………………………………………………………….

I’ll definitely give ……………… a try because ………………………………………………….

If I could ……………………………………………………………………………………………….

There’s no doubt I will ………………………………………………………………………………

I commit myself to (v-ing) …………………………………………………………………………..

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………

11-Scientists have known for decades that humans were changing the global climate, but CO2
levels continue to rise every year. Why is it so difficult to reduce CO2 emissions? And what are
the most promising solutions? Brainstorm all the words connected to this topic and then write
150 on it.
