Philippine Tourist Destinations

Tourist Destinations and Major Attractions
Attractions are the main reasons why people visit a destination. It is a place of interest because of its inherent
natural beauty and historical and/or cultural significance. A tourist attraction usually has value to the tourist,
which can be any of the following: historical importance, cultural value, political significance, nature, natural or
built beauty, and leisure and amusement. Examples of attractions are Magellan’s Cross, Colon Street, and
Bantayan Island, all located in a single destination, Cebu.
The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) defined destination as “the place visited that is
central to the decision to take the trip.” Bierman (as cited in Hasa, 2016) also defined a destination as “a
country, state, region, city, or town which is marketed or markets itself as a place for tourists to visit.” A tourist
destination often has more than one attraction. Manila, for example, is a destination with multiple attractions
like Rizal Park and Intramuros.
The key difference between a destination and an attraction is that a destination is an area with some attractions
and earns money from tourism, whereas an attraction is a place that attracts tourism.

The Philippines boasts 7,641 islands, each offering unique activities, beaches, and culture. Many are
internationally recognized as leading island destinations for their wellness getaways, diving sites, sandy beaches,
and thrilling adventures.
The following are the known tourist destinations and their major attractions in each region in the Philippines as
of November 2022:
Manila
ItNational Capital Region
is the Philippines' (NCR)
capital and offers top-notch shopping, performing and visual arts, cultural immersion, and
rest and recreation. It is also conveniently located near other popular destinations, such as the lakeshore towns
of Laguna de Bai, known for exquisite arts and crafts. The places to visit are the following:
 Intramuros – It is the oldest and most historic place in Manila, and its name translates to “within the

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), also known as the oldest
church in the Philippines. Fort Santiago is also an attraction within Intramuros, one of the oldest
fortifications in Manila, built by the Spaniards in 1571. Today, it is a memorial to the victims of World
War II and the sacrifices of the Filipino people in pursuit of freedom.
 Rizal Park – The premiere people’s park boasts world-class sculptures, historical markers, beautiful
gardens, facilities for photo and art exhibits, event venues, and various forms of entertainment. It

and conservation programs throughout the archipelago. It houses the National Museum of Fine Arts, the
National Museum of Anthropology, the National Museum of Natural History, and the National
Planetarium, which are repositories of Filipinos' natural and cultural history and environment.

temperatures with an average of 15-23°C. Baguio's pine-scented air and cool climate have earned it the name
“City of Pines.” The city is also known for its Panagbenga Festival, an annual flower festival celebrated every
February. “Panagbenga” comes from a Kankanaey term meaning “season of blooming.”

Benguet. The magic colors transformed the houses of the stone hill into an artwork that signifies the "re-
blooming" and "re-greening" of the environment.
Mountain Province
It is known for its hanging coffins where mummified remains of the local ancestors are found. Other points of

troops in the defeat of General Tomoyuki Yamashita of the Japanese Army.
Kalinga
This province is known to be the home of the last and oldest mambababatok (traditional Kalinga tattoo artist),
Apo Whang Od, in Buscalan Village. For over 70 years, Apo Whang-Od has been tattooing Kalinga warriors and
women going through the rites of passage: childbirth, adulthood, marriage, eldership, and ancestorship. She is
considered the last tattoo artist of her generation, using a mixed pigment of soot and water, a coconut bowl, an
orange/calamansi thorn attached to the end of a small bamboo stick, another stick as a tapper, and a long piece
of dried bamboo grass as tattoo template.

World Heritage Site recognized by UNESCO, built in the 16 th century, and is a trip back to the country’s early
history. It boasts colonial-era houses, horse-drawn carriages, and Baroque building designs as if resembling a
European town in the eyes of its visitors. Big chains and brands, such as 7-Eleven or Mcdonald's, present in the
area are designed in traditional colonial buildings rather than one that represents their usual architecture and
color scheme to blend in with the surroundings. Famous attractions here include:

freshwater sources and is prone to typhoons. Some popular diving sites are found in Anilao, which is brimming
with marine life.
Laguna
It is endowed with a bounty of nature, such as numerous mineral hot and cold springs, majestic waterfalls, and
protected forest areas with diverse flora and fauna. Pagsanjan Falls is known in Laguna, where skilled and
accredited boatmen will take visitors on an exciting boat ride or “shooting the rapids,” maneuvering through
turbulent waters at Magdapio River to reach the falls. The Enchanted Kingdom, the first and only world-class

stone church that was destroyed after the explosion of the Mayon volcano in 1814. Due to that eruption, only
the belfry and some parts of the convent survived and remained as proof of that dreadful day. The ruins became
a park that is now a popular tourist attraction in the area.
Other known attractions in the region are the Shrine of the Black Nazarene and Calaguas Islands in Camarines
Norte, Peñafrancia Basilica and Caramoan Islands in Camarines Sur, and Donsol Whale Shark Interaction Center

 Magellan’s Cross – It was first planted in 1521 under the orders of explorer Ferdinand Magellan, whose
discovery of the land brought 300 years of Spanish colonization of the Philippines. That day also marked

powers, so they started chipping it away. Because of that, the government officials were prompted to
encase it in another wooden cross.

Mindanao to teach locals about geography. After winning a small lottery, he built a house for his family on 16
hectares of land, now called The Rizal Shrine Park, a major historical landmark in Dapitan City. The P’gsalabuk
Circle is a must-visit landmark. It is a resin-made figure of three (3) people symbolizing Dipolog's three (3)
diverse cultures, including the Lumads, Muslims, and Christians, which captures tourists for its unique design.
They hold a bowl raised to the heavens as a gesture of thanksgiving to the Almighty God. It also appeals to God

Camiguin
It is known as the “Island Born of Fire” because of the seven (7) volcanoes and their eruptions shaping the
province’s landscape. Camiguin has abundant natural beauty, such as its hot and cold springs, waterfalls, lakes,
white-sand beaches, dive sites, and lagoons. This province's famous attractions are Mt. Timpoong and Mt.
Hibok- Hibok Range Natural Monument, which encompasses Mt. Hibok-Hibok (an active volcano) and Mt.
Timpoong. This natural monument was also declared an ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations)
Heritage Park in 2015 for being home to a wide range of flora and fauna that is endemic to the island province.
Another attraction in the area is the Sunken Cemetery, a place widely known for being the resting place of
thousands of people who have lost their lives during the eruption of the Old Vulcan (an active volcano in
Camiguin). Today, this is a major attraction in Camiguin, where tourists can dive and snorkel.
Misamis Oriental
Its capital is Cagayan de Oro, regarded as the “City of Golden Friendship” because of its friendly locals. The city
also stands as Mindanao's business, trade, information technology, and adventure tourism center. Fans of

botanical garden setting showcasing the different cultures of Northern Mindanao.
Other tourist spots in the region are Maria Cristina Falls in Lanao del Norte and Baliangao Wetland Park and
Dolphin Island in Misamis Occidental.

Davao del Sur

Region XI – Davao Region
It is the home to Mt. Apo, the highest mountain peak in the country. Davao is a mixture of the best modern city
living and the beauty of nature. The Davao del Norte province is hailed as the “Durian and Banana Capital of the
Philippines,” with many plantations run by multinationals and local producers. The places to visit in the area are
the following:
 People’s Park – It is a four-hectare-wide cultural-theme park featuring a mini-forest, man-made falls, a
dancing fountain at night, fishponds, a children’s playground, and a giant durian dome. It is one of the
cleanest and greenest parks in the Philippines, dubbed as the best park in the Philippines.
 Mount Apo – Locally known as Apo Sandawa, it is the highest mountain in the Philippines and a
potentially active volcano. It is also considered the grandfather of the Philippine mountains and a sacred
place in local mythology. Mt. Apo offers a significant climb, especially for local mountaineers. Those
seeking to experience its trails will also find themselves immersed in the rich culture of the people living
at the foot of the mountain.
 Philippine Eagle Center – It is home to the endangered Philippine eagle and houses several birds of prey
in the foothills of Mt. Apo.
Other known attractions in the region are the Malagos Garden Resort in Davao del Sur, Samal Island in Davao
del Norte, and Mt. Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary (a UNESCO Heritage Site) in Davao Oriental.

Region XII – SOCCSKSARGEN

Cotabato
Regarded as the “Fruit Basket of Mindanao,” the province has an agriculture-based industry with its vast plains
and rolling terrains providing suitable areas for growing various crops and tropical fruits. Rio Grande de
Mindanao, the second-largest river in the Philippines, is in this province. Lake Agco, coined as the “Garden of
Eden” of Kidapawan City, is considered a Natural Spa Village. It is a steaming hot lake in which sulfuric mud is
used for the mud spa applied by the Manobos (a tribe in Mindanao) on interested visitors, along with the natural
steam and hot bath. Asik-Asik Falls is also an attraction with unique 140-meter curtain-like spring falls that are
popular among nature lovers.
South Cotabato
The province, dubbed the “Land of the Dreamweavers,” is in the southern part of Mindanao. It is the home of
the T’boli Tribe (a distinguished tribal group by their colorful clothes, bracelets, and earrings, and is famous for
their complicated beadwork, wonderfully woven fabric, and beautiful brass ornaments). One of the tourist
attractions here is Lake Sebu, where seven (7) magnificent falls are interconnected and can be viewed through
an aerial float. Another tourist spot is the Bakngeb River Cave which has a wide river pool in its outlet that
visitors can swim in, and its underground cave system makes the water naturally cold and crystal clear.

Region XIII – Caraga

Surigao del Norte
This province consists of two (2) major islands – Siargao Island and Bucas Grande Island. Siargao Island is a
teardrop-shaped island that attracts local and international visitors. It is the “Surfing Capital of the Philippines”
and is home to some of the best beaches in Asia.
Cloud 9 Beach, the main surf, is where the Siargao International Surfing Cup is held every year and is a famous
surfing spot in Siargao. A boardwalk is also found along Cloud 9, leading to a three-story viewing platform where
tourists can watch surfing enthusiasts and catch the sunrise and sunset.
Magpupungko Rock Pools are natural rock pools that reveal themselves during low tide. When the water has
gone down, a rocky path appears. It frames dozens of natural jewel-toned saltwater pools scattered unevenly.
The pools are deep enough for tourists to dive into from the low-lying cliffs and are great for swimming and
snorkeling.
Tayangban Cave Pool is a cave featuring beautiful stalactite formations inside. Ropes and bamboo are used to
traverse and navigate the cave, where visitors enjoy emerald green cenotes with some fantastic cliff-jumping
spots.
Naked Island, Daku Island, and Guyam Island are available in this province for single-day island hopping activities.
Surigao del Sur
It is located on the northeastern coast of Mindanao, facing the Pacific Ocean. The Diwata Mountain Range lines
the northwestern boundaries of the province from the rest of Mindanao. Tinuy-an Falls is the Niagara Falls of
the Philippines, with three (3) tiers of land formation that form pools of varying sizes and elevation below.
Enchanted River, a turquoise blue lagoon with crystal clear water that seems to be a natural aquarium
habituated by colorful fishes of different species and sizes, is also located in the area.
Tourist attractions also available in this region are Balangay Shrine Museum in Agusan del Norte, Agusan Marsh
Wildlife Sanctuary in Agusan del Sur, and the Philippine Benevolent Missionaries Association (PBMA) Shrine in

Ampatuan town. Mayor Samsodin Dimaukom financed the construction of the mosque completed in mid-2014.
Its pink color was intended to symbolize peace and love, aside from being his wife's favorite color. Christian
