The Dove and the Hawks

A poor farmer once had a terrible problem with hawks. The great birds were stealing his
chickens. First, the farmer and his wife tried to frighten the hawks away. Then they tried to
catch the hawks, but nothing worked. Finally, they made a strong net to trap them. Every day
they checked the net to see if there were hawks in the net.
One afternoon, as usual, the farmer went to look at his net. There, to his surprise, he
found a dove caught inside the hawk’s net. “ Let me go! Let me go! The dove begged the
farmer.
Why should I let you out? the farmer asked.
“ Because I am not a hawk.” said the dove.

Now the poor farmer had lost many chickens to the hawks. He looked carefully at the
dove. “Yes, I can see that you’re not a hawk.” He responded. “ But since you fly with them. You
