SAFETY INFORMATION
Advisory Labels
Cautionary signal words (Danger-Warning-Caution) may appear in various locations throughout this
manual. Information accented by one of these signal words must be observed to minimize the risk of
personal injury to service personnel, or the possibility of improper service methods which may damage
the vehicle or cause it to be unsafe. Additional Notes and Service Hints are used to emphasize areas of
procedural importance and provide suggestions for ease of repair. The following definitions indicate the
use of these advisory labels as they appear throughout the manual:

Activities associated with Danger indicate that death or serious personal

injury may result from failing to heed the advisory. Serious personal injury
may be equated to career-ending injury.

Activities associated with Warning indicate that personal injury may result
from failing to heed the advisory. In this case, personal injury is not equated to
career-ending injury, but results in possible change in quality of life.

Activities associated with Caution indicate that product damage may result from
failing to heed the advisory. Caution is not used for personal injury.

A procedure, practice, or condition that is essential to emphasize.

A helpful suggestion that will make it quicker and/or easier to perform a procedure,
while possibly reducing service cost.

INTRODUCTION
Service Procedures and Tool Usage
Anyone using a service procedure or tool not recommended in this manual must first satisfy himself
thoroughly that neither his safety nor vehicle safety will be jeopardized by the service method he selects.
Individuals deviating in any manner from the instructions provided assume all risks of consequential
personal injury or damage to equipment involved.

Also note that particular service procedures may require the use of a special tool(s) designed for a
specific purpose. These special tools must be used in the manner described, whenever specified in the
instructions.

1. Before starting a vehicle, always be seated in the driver’s seat, place the
transmission in neutral, be sure that parking brakes are set, and
disengage the clutch.
2. Before working on a vehicle, place the transmission in neutral, set the
parking brakes, and block the wheels.
3. Before towing the vehicle, place the transmission in neutral and lift the
rear wheels off the ground, or disconnect the driveline to avoid damage to
the transmission during towing.

Engine-driven components such as Power Take-Off (PTO) units, fans and fan
belts, driveshafts and other related rotating assemblies, can be very
dangerous. Do not work on or service engine-driven components unless the
engine is shut down. Always keep body parts and loose clothing out of range
of these powerful components to prevent serious personal injury. Be aware of
PTO engagement or nonengagement status. Always disengage the PTO when
not in use.

REMEMBER,
SAFETY . . . IS NO ACCIDENT!

INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION
The Mack Trucks, Inc. 1999/2000 engine model
lineup, with horsepower ratings ranging from 275
to 460, represents the largest engine selection
and the best power-to-weight ratio available in
the industry. Included are the MaxiCruise™
engines with horsepower ratings of 310/330,
330/350 and 355/380. This engine is designed to
cruise at 1,500 rpm, where peak power and
minimum Brake Specific Fuel Consumption
(BSFC) are developed, thereby ensuring
optimum gradeability and fuel efficiency. At
noncruising speeds, the lower power level and
fueling rates further contribute to the overall fuel
economy of the engine.

For service and overhaul information on the

E-Tech™ engine, refer to the MACK E-Tech™
Engine Service Procedures Manual, 5-106.
Specific maintenance, service interval and
lubricant specification information is included in
the Maintenance and Lubrication manual, TS494,
found in the vehicle glove box.

TROUBLESHOOTING
FUEL INJECTION NOZZLE When checking nozzle opening (popping)
pressure, use only moderate pumping action.
TESTING 4

Any time an injection nozzle is removed for

diagnostic procedures, check nozzle
performance with the following tests:
r Opening (popping) pressure (compared to
specifications)
r Spray pattern to make sure all the nozzle
holes are open
r Atomization (mist versus dribble/stream)
r Seat leakage (at 290 psi below opening
pressure, the nozzle is not leaking if the time
between two droplets is at least 10 seconds)

Use either the Kent-Moore Injection Nozzle Test

kit J 28700-A, available from SPX Kent-Moore, or
Delphi test kit, 7158-14470D, available through
the MACK Parts System, to check injection
nozzles. When checking nozzle spray pattern and
atomization, the pump handle should be pumped
vigorously (approximately two to three strokes Figure 4 — Pumping Tester Moderately
per second) to simulate the same type of action
the nozzle receives in the engine. Compare opening pressure obtained during the
3 test with published specifications. Refer to the
engine specification pages for nozzle opening
pressures of the specific engine being serviced. If
the injection nozzles are covered under warranty
(either OEM or extended warranty), and opening
pressure does not meet specifications, the nozzle
must be replaced.
For injection nozzles that are no longer
covered under the warranty, the nozzle tips
can be removed and cleaned or replaced, and
opening pressure can be adjusted. Use the
cleaning procedures outlined in the CLEANING
INJECTION NOZZLES section. Opening
pressure is adjusted by changing the shims that
control the spring reaction strength. Shims are
available in thicknesses of 0.30 mm through
1.56 mm. When reassembling the nozzle, tighten
the cap nut to 29.5–37 lb-ft (40–50 N•m).

If atomization, spray pattern or opening pressure

Figure 3 — Pumping Tester Vigorously do not meet specifications, replace the nozzle.

Listening for nozzle “chatter” is not a valid test

and cannot be used to judge nozzle performance.

cavities collapse or implode, creating a
mechanical scrubbing action that loosens dirt.
This action occurs approximately 55,000 times
per second, to blast dirt off the part. The

REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS
Nozzle Reassembly
1. Reassemble all nozzle internal components.
Do not use a steel wire wheel to clean injection (Reassemble with the original pressure
nozzles, as this will result in damage to the spray adjusting shims that were used with the
holes and cause low flow and low power. nozzle.)
17

Probe and clean the nozzle spray holes as shown

in Figure 16. Use the appropriate size needle for
the engine model as indicated below:
r E-Tech™, up to 400 horsepower: 0.202 mm
(0.00795 inch) Valve Covering Orifice (VCO)
with 8 spray holes.
r E-Tech™, 427 to 460 horsepower:
0.226 mm (0.00889 inch) VCO with 8 spray
holes.

2. Install and tighten the nozzle cap nut to

29.5–37 lb-ft (40–50 N•m).
3. Pressure test the nozzle. If nozzle opening
pressure is not within specifications, adjust
as necessary. Thicker shims increase
pressure, thinner shims decrease pressure.
