What does the SCADA Host do?

• Primary purpose is real-time operation of the pipeline

• Three main functions performed:
- Communicate with the field devices
- Process and store the data in real-time and historical databases on the SCADA servers
- Provide an HMI for the gas controllers
• Secondary purpose is sourcing data to other applications for safe and profitable operation of
the pipeline
- Chris Smith (Editor of ‘Oil & Gas Pipelines’) calls it the “Enterprise Information Demand”

Honeywell Confidential - © 2017 by Honeywell International Inc. All rights reserved.

3 Main Functions: Communications
• Wide variety of field equipment, some many years old
- Multiple protocols required in the SCADA host
• Multiple communications schemes
- Polled, report-by-exception, and cryout
• Multiple paths to key devices
- Host monitors communications efficiency, automatically failsover to back
up path(s)
• Real-time data for SCADA/operations
• Custody transfer data for measurement and gas accounting
• Has to be robust

Honeywell Confidential - © 2017 by Honeywell International Inc. All rights reserved.

3 Main Functions: Real-time Database
• Memory-resident real-time database (Disk-based databases just
won’t do!)
- Very few off-the-shelf real-time databases
• Capable of handling hundreds of thousands of data points, quickly
and robustly
• Alarming
• Serves up data to operator workstations
• Serves up data to other applications
• Has to be robust (Redundant servers in a hot standby configuration)

Honeywell Confidential - © 2017 by Honeywell International Inc. All rights reserved.

3 Main Functions: HMI for the entire pipeline

• Allows operators to view and control the pipeline

• Overview maps, Station Displays, Control popups, etc.
• A picture is worth a thousand words…

Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline Project

As part of the Southern Gas Corridor, the Trans Anatolian Natural

Gas Pipeline (“TANAP”) Project aims to transport Azeri Gas from
the Shah Deniz gas field and other fields of Azerbaijan to Turkey
and to Europe through the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline.

When all phases are complete the pipeline will have seven
operational compressor stations and one offtake
compressor station. The phased expansion of the pipeline's
capacity will be implemented by the addition of equipment without
interrupting the operation of the pipeline.
Phase 0 and Phase 1
consists of
ICSS (Integrated Control & Safety Systems) • CS1 and CS5 comp. Stations
• Off-take comp. CS5
